Deputy Minister of Transport Dr. Prasanna Gunasena claimed that the system of the Department of Motor Traffic (RMV) was deliberately taken offline, linking the incident to the government’s broader efforts to combat corruption.

“The RMV’s system was deliberately brought down,” he said, alleging that the disruption was orchestrated by individuals with vested interests resisting reform.

Gunasena said the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation oversees several institutions with significant capital expenditure and is plagued by widespread corruption.

He noted that officials from the Department of Motor Traffic, including the Commissioner General, have been implicated in various allegations, including financial misappropriation.

“We believe it will take time to clean this up. Every time we initiate reforms, there is resistance,” the minister said, referring to recent disruptions within the RMV.

He added that corrupt elements removed from governance are now acting in defiance, and some state officials still entangled in these networks must take corrective action.

“This is a chain. We urge those still involved to change course immediately. If you have engaged in corruption, you will have to answer for it,” he warned. (Newswire)
