The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved a proposal to create a digital system for mapping and registering rubber lands in response to new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements for rubber exports.

The EU, a key market for Sri Lankan rubber products, will require exporters to prove that their supply chains do not contribute to deforestation after Dec. 31, 2025, the government said.

The project will use Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to geocode rubber lands owned by small estate holders and produce verifiable data on land ownership and use.

The proposal was presented by the Minister of Plantation and Infrastructure Facilities. (Newswire)
