A 29-year-old Russian national has been rescued from drowning in the Pannamgoda sea in Hikkaduwa last evening, the Police said.  

The woman had been swept away while bathing in the sea, after which she had been rescued by two officials of the Hikkaduwa Police Lifeguard Unit, who were on duty at the beach.  

The rescued woman is a 29-year-old Russian national. (Newswire)

A 37-year-old foreign tourist has been rescued from drowning in the seas off Polhena in Matara last afternoon.

The tourist had been rescued by two Police lifeguards who were on duty at the beach at the time of the incident.

A 33-year-old Russian tourist has died after drowning in the seas off the Thiranagama area in Hikkaduwa yesterday.

The Police said the victim had been sea bathing with his friends, but at the time of the incident, he had been alone as the rest had returned to their hotel for breakfast.

The body of the Russian man has been placed at the Karapitiya Hospital, while the Hikkaduwa Police is conducting investigations. (Newswire)

United Republic Front (URF) Leader MP Patali Champika Ranawaka has condemned the recent incident involving the alleged harassment of Russian tourists at a beach hotel in Sri Lanka, stating it is deeply regrettable and unacceptable. 

Issuing a statement, MP Champika Ranawaka said Sri Lanka and Russia have enjoyed a longstanding and strong diplomatic relationship, built on mutual respect and cooperation. 

MP Champika Ranawaka pointed out that such incidents tarnish the reputation of both countries and undermine the goodwill that exists between them.

“As a party, we strongly urge the government to take immediate and decisive action to investigate the matter thoroughly and apprehend the culprits responsible for the harassment. It is essential that justice is served swiftly and that the guilty parties face the maximum punishment under the law if found culpable.

“Furthermore, steps should be taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future and that the safety and well-being of all tourists, including Russian visitors, are safeguarded. A Russian tourist has been ordered to pay a compensation of over Rs. 1.8 million for causing a motor accident resulting in severe losses to the Sri Lanka Railways, it was reported.

According to Lankadeepa, the order was issued by Galle Additional Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagamage on Thursday (Feb 15).

The Russian tourist is reported to have visited Sri Lanka in 2014 during which he had resided at a house in the Ahangama area.

On January 23, 2014, the Russian along with another individual had travelled in a car and had crossed the Goviyapana- Jayasumanarama railway crossing in Ahangama when they were hit by a train.

The Russian and his friend had sustained minor injuries in the accident, while severe damages had been caused to the train engine and vehicle. 

Soon after the incident, Sri Lanka Police filed a case under traffic offences and the Railway Department also filed a case on the damages caused to the train engine and the electrical signal box. (NewsWire)

A Russian tourist has sustained serious injuries after falling off a train in Sri Lanka while attempting to take a selfie.

According to the Ella Police, the injured tourist has been identified as a 25-year-old Russian woman.

The tourist had attempted to take a selfie while the train was on the move and had fallen off close to Ella. 

The tourist was admitted to the Demodara Base Hospital following the incident. 

She had faced this unfortunate incident while travelling from Hikkaduwa to Ella on a one-day visit. (NewsWire)

The leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF), MP Wimal Weerawansa has announced the launch of the English and Russian translations of his latest book, ‘9: Sangawuna Kathawa’.

An individual has died in a motor accident reported in the Kottawa area on the Southern Expressway. 

The deceased has been identified as a resident of Akmeemana, Galle. 

A female Russian national who was travelling in the car at the time of the accident has been admitted to the Homaga Hospital with injuries. 

The Police stated that the car had crashed into a lorry that had been parked by the side of the road on the expressway due to a technical fault.

Investigations have revealed that the accident had occurred when the driver of the car was on the way to drop the Russian national at the airport from Galle.
