Former parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena has been further remanded until March 31 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama in connection with allegations of illegally acquiring assets worth Rs. 243.8 million.

Gunawardena was produced in court today (24) by prison officials after being taken into custody earlier this month by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. 

The Bribery Commission informed the court that charges had been filed over undisclosed assets spanning the period from 2015 to 2026.

Investigators told the court that although Gunawardena, along with his wife and children, had undertaken numerous foreign trips, no expenditure details had been submitted. 

Further inquiries revealed that his wife maintained private bank accounts with deposits amounting to around Rs. 34 million, and had also launched a new business valued at over Rs. 40 million.

The Bribery Commission requested that Gunawardena be further remanded to allow statements to be recorded from his wife and others linked to the investigation. 

Counsel appearing for the former MP sought bail, but the magistrate ordered continued remand.

Gunawardena was initially arrested on March 9 when he appeared before the Bribery Commission to provide a statement, and was remanded until March 23 before today’s extension. (Newswire)

Former Member of Parliament Sajin Vass Gunawardena was today (16) indicted before the Colombo High Court on corruption charges.

According to reports, the indictments were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

The indictments have been filed over four charges, including causing losses to the government by leasing an aircraft for Mihin Lanka outside the legal tender process.

Former Member of Parliament Sajin Vass Gunawardena appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning to provide a statement related to the ongoing investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

According to Sajin Vass Gunawardena, he was summoned by the CID to inquire about telephone calls made to former President Maithripala Sirisena during the Easter attacks, which included a call from him.

Former Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena has been discharged from the case filed over the alleged corruption of nearly Rs 883 million during his tenure as the CEO of state-owned Mihin Lanka.

The Colombo High Court today discharged the former minister from the case that had been filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. 

The case was filed alleging that Sajin Vass Gunawardena had entered into an illegal contract with a Singaporean Company while purchasing ground handling equipment for Mihin Lanka.

Counsel Shavendra Fernando PC defending Gunawardena had earlier filed a preliminary objection claiming that a suspect once acquitted from a case cannot be charged for the same offence in another court of law.

Pointing out that his client had been previously acquitted by the Colombo Magistrate Court over the case, he emphasized that his client had once again been indicted before the High Court erroneously.

Counsel Shavendra Fernando PC revealed that this was contrary to the law as there is no provision in the law to frame charges against Gunawardena on the same charges. 

Taking into consideration the facts, High Court Judge Damith Totawatte maintained the defence’s position and discharged Sajin Vaas Gunawardena from the case. (NewsWire)
