Police in Medawachchiya have arrested a 29‑year‑old resident in connection with a video circulated on social media showing a man entering a salon, attempting to extort money, and assaulting the owner.

A complaint on the incident was filed with the Medawachchiya Police Station on June 10. The assault had occurred on June 9 and was widely circulated online. 

Following investigations, officers arrested the suspect last evening and seized the sharp weapon allegedly used in the assault.

Police said inquiries revealed the attack was not linked to extortion but stemmed from a longstanding dispute between the suspect and the business owner.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court today (18).

The newly upgraded Beauty Salon at the Police Field Force Headquarters in Thimbirigasyaya, Colombo, was officially declared open on Tuesday (15) under the patronage of the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerariya.

A special feature of the initiative is that experienced family members of police officers will be given the opportunity to provide services at the salon.
