Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga visited former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake, who is currently remanded at Magazine Prison.

Issuing a statement, Kumaratunga said she does not usually visit prisons but described Ekanayake as “a good person and a skilled administrator.”

“We need a skilled administrative service to run the country,” she said.

Kumaratunga alleged that targeting administrative officials who are not politically aligned with a particular party began during the government of J.R. Jayawardena and claimed that the current administration is continuing what she described as political revenge carried over from past governments.

She said the country requires experienced administrators such as Ekanayake, noting that entering the public administrative service requires significant skill and merit.

The former president said she visited the prison to express her disapproval over the situation.

Former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake was ordered to be further remanded until February 18 after appearing before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today.

He was initially ordered to be remanded on January 8 in a case alleging misuse of state funds by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe,.

Ekanayake has been named as the second suspect in the case, which alleges that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe misused approximately Rs. 16.9 million in public funds to attend his wife Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe’s graduation ceremony in London during an official visit in late 2023.

The trip was part of a broader state visit to the United States and the United Kingdom and was reportedly undertaken with a government-funded delegation.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on August 22, 2025, and remanded until August 26, becoming the first Sri Lankan head of state to be placed in remand custody.

He was later released on three personal bail bonds of Rs. 5 million each, following the submission of medical reports. (Newswire)

Former President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake has been informed that he does not need to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today.

Former DG to the President’s Media Division, Dhanushka Ramanayake, told Newswire that the CID had informed Saman Ekanayake in this regard.

Saman Ekanayake was summoned before the Special Investigations Unit of the CID today. 

Summons were issued to him for further questioning regarding former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s overseas trip to London, which was allegedly funded by state funds.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was recently remanded and released on bail for using state funds to travel to the United Kingdom for his wife’s graduation in London. (Newswire)
