Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake has announced his retirement from the post and the state service today.

Issuing a statement, Saman Sri Ratnayake said he had served as a state official for the last 34 years.

He was appointed as the Commissioner General of Elections on 16th October 2019.

Sri Lanka’s Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake has warned that election surveys which influence the independent views of voters are a punishable offence.

In a message to the media, Saman Sri Ratnayake said that persons involved in such surveys could be arrested.

He further made a request to refrain from conducting election surveys which influence the independent views of voters.

The message comes as Sri Lanka heads into a Presidential Election on September 21, 2024, in which 38 candidates are set to contest. (Newswire)

The date to conduct the Presidential Election will be decided between September 18 and October 18, the Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said. 

Addressing the media, Ratnayake said that the Presidential Elections are held every 5 years and as the last election was held in November 2019, the next election must be held two months before November this year.

Ratnayake further said that there were sufficient funds to conduct the Presidential Election.

“Several departments are involved in conducting the Presidential election. If all relevant departments do their part, there will be no issues with funds or conducting the election,” he said. (NewsWire)
