The Cabinet has approved the continuation of a program to provide sanitary napkins to schoolgirls in 2026, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted education.

The initiative will cover about 1.05 million adolescent girls studying in Grades 6 and above in all government schools, as well as in government-approved special schools.

Under the program, each student will receive vouchers worth Rs. 1,440, issued as two vouchers of Rs. 720 each, Cabinet spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

The vouchers can be used to purchase sanitary napkin packs during the year, based on individual preference.

Options include 12 packs containing eight napkins priced at Rs. 120 each, or eight packs containing 10 napkins priced at Rs. 180 each.

The proposal was submitted by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education and received Cabinet approval.

The national programme to provide sanitary napkins to schoolgirls was launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Education. (Newswire)

Minister of Education, PM Harini Amarasuriya, says the programme to provide sanitary napkins to schoolgirls, launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Education as a national initiative targeting schoolgirls in rural, estate, and economically disadvantaged areas, will continue to be implemented in 2026. 

PM Amarasuriya said in a statement that the programme covers more than one million schoolgirls above Grade 6 across schools islandwide, with a total allocation of Rs. 1.44 billion.

The details of the programme were discussed at a meeting held on Monday (22 Dec) at the Ministry of Education to review the project aimed at improving menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls. 

The discussion was held with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Education, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, and a group of senior officials. (Newswire)

The 2025 programme to distribute sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Sri Lanka will be implemented exclusively through four commercial entities, the Education Ministry said.

These companies have been registered with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and certified under SLS 1732:2022, the Ministry said.

These approved entities will directly deliver sanitary pad packets to schools. No other organization is authorized to supply sanitary pads under this initiative, the statement said. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Education launched its inaugural programme to grant vouchers for the purchase of sanitary napkins at the President’s Girls College in Nawala today. 

According to Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, an investment of Rs. 1 billion has been allocated for this programme, with the view of encouraging school attendance. 

Accordingly, a voucher of Rs. 1,200 will be given per schoolgirl under the sanitary napkin programme.

The Ministry of Education has already organized the necessary activities to provide the vouchers through schools.

Under the programme, the Ministry of Education has taken steps to provide vouchers to buy sanitary napkins for 06 months starting from June 2024.

Sanitary napkins will be provided via vouchers for the 07 national schools belonging to the estate school category and all the provincial schools from the entire student population of Sri Lanka. (Newswire)

Cabinet approval has been granted for the programme to provide sanitary pads for female school students facing poverty. 

According to the government, the total student population in Sri Lanka amounts to 04 million and out of this 1.2 million are female students who have attained youth.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Education to implement a programme to provide sanitary napkins free of charge annually from April 2024.
