The Department of Examinations says a total of 51,969 (17.11%) have passed the cut-off marks of the 2025 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination. 

The Exam Department said the cut-off marks were 140 for the Sinhala Medium and 134 for the Tamil Medium.

The highest mark of 198 in the Scholarship examination is in the Sinhala Medium, reported from Galle.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ruled that awarding free marks for the three leaked questions in the first paper of the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination violates fundamental human rights. 

The court further ordered the Commissioner General of Examinations to proceed with one of the most suitable recommendations provided by the expert committee appointed to probe the matter.

The Supreme Court also ordered the Director of the Planning Division at the National Institute of Education in Maharagama and a tuition teacher from Alawwa, arrested in connection to the paper leak, to pay compensation of Rs. 03 million and 02 million, respectively to the government. 

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination, which was held in September, faced a crisis after a mock paper was shared with the questions that had been featured in the exam paper. 

A practice paper with questions similar to some of the questions in the first paper of the scholarship exam was circulated by a tuition teacher in the Alawwa area prior to the exam.

At the time, the Department of Examinations launched an investigation into the matter following complaints filed by various parties.

A complaint was lodged by a Deputy Commissioner of the Examinations Department, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as well.

The Police thereafter, arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged leaking of questions from the Grade 5 scholarship exam. 

Soon after, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya instructed the Education Ministry to appoint a committee consisting of local and international experts to obtain recommendations on the matter. (Newswire)

The Attorney General today informed the Supreme Court that the Cabinet has decided to award free marks for three contested questions in the Grade 05 scholarship exam.

Citing the undue pressure placed on students, it had also been decided to not reconduct the examination.

The development follows an interim order issued by the Supreme Court on November 18, halting the evaluation of answer sheets and the release of results for the scholarship examination held on September 15 this year.

The court’s decision came after considering four fundamental rights petitions that highlighted the alleged leakage of several exam questions, which petitioners argued had caused significant unfairness to candidates. (Newswire)

A special discussion has been held between Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and officials of the Education Ministry concerning the recent Grade 05 scholarship examination paper leak. 

At the discussion held yesterday, the Education Ministry officials briefed the Prime Minister on the measures that have been taken with regard to the incident. 

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the following measures were conveyed to the Prime Minister;

• A preliminary probe was conducted by the Examinations Department and a report on the relevant officials involved in the paper leak has been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). 
• The CID has launched investigations and has already apprehended one suspect involved in the paper leak.
• The CID has informed that it intends to conclude the investigation shortly.
• The Education Ministry will initiate legal action against those found guilty. 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya had instructed the Education Ministry to appoint a committee consisting of local and international experts to obtain recommendations on improving the paper marking system.

The Prime Minister further instructed the officials to take measures based on the probe reports in a manner that does not further affect the children or parents concerned with the scholarship exam. (Newswire)

A group of parents have engaged in a protest against the Department of Examination’s decision to provide the results of the Grade 05 Scholarship exam, exempting the marks of the first three questions in paper one due to it being leaked before the exam. 

The protest was staged in front of the Department of Examination today with the parents urging for the examination to be annulled.  

The Department of Examination had allowed a group of parents to hand over a written petition to the authorities in this regard. The Police and Anti-riot unit personnel have been summoned in view of the ongoing protest.

Speaking to the media, the parents claimed that the Commissioner General of Examinations has taken the matter lightly, and hence, must resign.

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination was held last Sunday with 323,879 students sitting for the exam.

However, a practice paper with questions similar to some of the questions in the first paper of the scholarship exam was circulated by a tuition teacher in the Alawwa area prior to the exam.

The Grade 05 Scholarship Examination will be held once again under the Sajith Premadasa Government that will be formed following the 2024 Presidential Election, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Dayasiri Jayasekera said. 

Pointing out that the question paper of the just concluded Grade 05 Scholarship Examination had been leaked, MP Jayasekera said that discussions will be held after the election to reconduct the examination.

The Ministry of Education has issued a notice on the admission of schools for students who sat for the Grade 05 scholarship examination in 2023.

As per the notice, appeals for the enrollment of students for Grade 06 based on the scholarship examination results will be accepted from tomorrow (Feb 13). 

The Education Ministry said the appeals will be accepted from 13-29 February 2024 via the online system.

Appeals can be made for a maximum of three schools via the applications sent through the Education Ministry’s official website www.moe.gov.lk.

The Department of Examinations has made two key announcements pertaining to the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination that was held on Sunday (Oct 15).

The Examination Department announced that the results of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will be released within a period of 45 days.

The department further said that stern legal action would be taken against those who released the Scholarship Examination paper to social media following the exam.

The warning had been issued after it was brought to the notice of the Examination Department of the exam paper being circulated on social media platforms.
