The Department of Meteorology says the deep depression that was over the Bay of Bengal has moved inland over India, crossing the coast of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.

Under the influence of this system, heavy thundershowers are expected over the sea areas of the West central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, with winds occasionally increasing up to 70-80 kmph, and the sea conditions in these areas will become very rough.

Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas in between 10°N and 22°N latitude and 82°E and 90°E longitude until further notice, with those operating in those sea areas advised to move away from the affected sea areas.

Naval and fishing communities engaging in activities over these sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts issued by the department of meteorology in this regard.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle today (25). Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas during the evening or night.

Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-65 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. The winds can be increased up to 50-55 kmph in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Negombo to Galle via Beruwala.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Negombo to Galle via Beruwala will be rough at times.

The Department of Meteorology says that the Depression that was located over the Northwest Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a Deep Depression and is currently located around 1,000 km northeast of Sri Lanka, as of 05.30 am today (23). 

This system is very likely to move further west-northwestwards and cross the coastal areas of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha, India.

Under the influence of this system, heavy thundershowers are expected over the sea areas of the Bay of Bengal, with winds occasionally increasing up to 70 kmph, and the sea conditions in these areas will become very rough.

Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas in between 7°N and 22°N latitude and 83°E and 95°E longitude until further notice. Naval and fishing communities operating in those sea areas are advised to move away from the affected sea areas.

Naval and fishing communities engaging in activities in these sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts issued by the Met Department in this regard.

A British Sri Lankan teen has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex on Sunday evening, it was reported.

According to British media reports, Sussex Police confirmed that emergency services were called just before 7:00 pm BST to assist three people who had encountered trouble in the water.

An 18‑year‑old was pulled from the sea about 30 minutes later, but despite efforts by paramedics, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. His next of kin have been informed. 

Police initially reported the victim as a 24‑year‑old, but later clarified his age as 18. Two others, a 16‑year‑old boy and a 24‑year‑old man, managed to return safely to shore.

The three individuals, who were known to each other, had travelled to the beach from London. 

The coastguard, Pett Level lifeboat, and South East Coast Ambulance Service also responded to the incident. 

Sussex Police said inquiries remain ongoing, with an increased emergency presence in the area. 

The force added that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, which will be examined by a coroner. (Newswire)

According to the advisory, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough at times, with gusty winds exceeding 60 kmph. Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into these waters until further notice.

The Department of Meteorology says the warning issued earlier advising naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea areas around Sri Lanka, has been withdrawn.

The warning has been withdrawn as the Deep Depression which was located about 300 km North-northeast of Kankasanthurai, is very likely to move northwards, away from the island and weaken further.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Pottuvil via Galle and Matara. Showers are likely at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Mannar via Kankasanthurai.

Winds will be South-westerly and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota may be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island may be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thunderstorms. (Newswire)

Two individuals have been reported dead in Puttalam after consuming liquid from a bottle that was found floating in the sea. 

According to the Police, two others are currently receiving treatment at the Puttalam Hospital. 

The Police said the group of four had consumed the liquid while at a fishing hut in the Norochcholai area in Puttalam. 

Following the death of one individual in the hospital, the Police had launched a probe into the incident. 

Thereafter, the Police found the body of another individual at the fishing hut. 

The Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for strong winds, heavy showers and rough seas for multi-day boats in the Bay of Bengal sea area and the Eastern shallow sea areas of the island, valid for the next 24 hours starting at 12.00 pm today.

According to the Department, the low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which has moved nearly westwards, has concentrated into a Depression and lies centred at 0530 hrs of today (25), over the same region, near latitude 10.8°N & longitude 89.0°E, about 900 km north-east of Batticaloa.

It is likely to move nearly west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression by tomorrow (26) and into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal by Sunday morning (27). Thereafter, it is likely to move northwestwards towards the Andhra Pradesh coast during the subsequent 48 hrs.

The Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture into the deep-sea areas bounded by 05N-15N and 80E-95E, until further notice. The Naval and fishing communities operating in those sea areas are advised to move away from the affected sea areas. 

The Naval and fishing communities are also warned not to venture into the shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee, until further notice. The Naval and fishing communities, engaging in activities over the shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, are requested to be vigilant in this regard.

The wind speed in the sea areas marked on the map below will increase to 55-65 kmph at times with heavy thundershowers, and those sea areas will be rough or very rough at times. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for strong winds, heavy showers and rough seas for multi-day boats in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea areas, effective for the next 24 hours, starting from 01.00 pm today. 

According to the department, the Depression over the southeast Arabian Sea has moved slowly north-northeastwards with a speed of 3 kmph during the past 6 hours and lies centred at 0000 UTC of today (23) over the same region near latitude 9.7°N, longitude 67.7°E.

The department warns that it is likely to move northeastwards across the southeast Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours.

As such, the wind speed in the sea areas will increase to 55-65 kmph at times with heavy thundershowers, and those sea areas will be rough or very rough at times. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for rough seas and strong winds, requesting the Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in this regard. 

According to the Met Department, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee.
