Former Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman says the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) must ensure Tamil representation in the new Parliament of Sri Lanka from the Colombo District. 

Speaking to Newswire, the former Governor pointed out that despite Tamil representatives being elected in all upcountry plantation districts, the Colombo and Kandy Districts failed to elect Tamil representatives.

Highlighting that the Tamils living in the Colombo District and Western Province require a Tamil representative in Parliament, Senthil Thondaman said Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader Mano Ganesan fits the role.

Senthil Thondaman revealed that Mano Ganesan, who contested under the SJB, has obtained more Tamil votes than any other candidate who contested in the Colombo District. 

As such, he said the SJB must consider providing a National List to a Tamil representative in the new Parliament, with Mano Ganesan the suitable option. 

The former Governor added that although the TPA and CWC may have different political opinions they are of the same policy on increased representation of Tamil MPs in Parliament. (Newswire)

A program has been launched under the Eastern Province Tourism Bureau to protect the deer population in Trincomalee.

A statement from the Eastern Province Governor’s Office stated that the process of conducting a deer survey was launched in Trincomalee City on Saturday (24).

The program was jointly launched by the Eastern Province Tourism Bureau, the Divisional Secretariat of Town & Gravats, and the Urban Council of Trincomalee to survey the deer population in Trincomalee City.

Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman, the Chairman of the Eastern Province Tourism Bureau, the Divisional Secretary, the Urban Council Secretary, Government officials and Volunteers from several organizations participated in this program.

Commenting on the program, Governor Senthil Thondaman said that an anatomical examination revealed more than 20 deer have died in Trincomalee due to the reason of eating plastic waste.

The Governor further stated that a committee has been appointed to look into the issues of deer safety and food and that hopefully, Trincomalee will become a place with more deer in the forthcoming days. (NewsWire)

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed three new Provincial Governors today (May 17).

The three new Governors were sworn in at the Presidential Secretariat before the President.

P.S. M. Charles, who served as the Northern Province Governor in 2019, has once again been sworn in as the Governor of the Northern Province. 

Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) Leader Senthil Thondaman was sworn in as the Governor of the Eastern Province. 

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has been sworn in as the Governor of the North Western Province. 

The appointments come after the President removed Jeevan Thiagarajah (Northern Governor), Anuradha Yahampath (Eastern Governor), and Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda (North Western Governor) from their posts on Monday (May 15). (NewsWire)
