Former Bangladesh cricket captain and former Awami League MP Shakib Al Hasan’s house in Magura was attacked on Wednesday, just hours after he appeared at former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s virtual press conference.

The attack took place between 8:45 pm and 9:00 pm. Magura Sadar Police officer Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun said a group of miscreants pelted stones at the house and smashed its windows.

The attackers also allegedly tried to set the house on fire. Reports claim they brought petrol-filled soft drink bottles to carry out the arson attempt.

Fortunately, the house was empty at the time of the attack, and no injuries were reported. Shakib is currently in Sri Lanka. Police have since been deployed at the property.

Shakib attended Hasina’s virtual meeting

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed people virtually on Wednesday for the first time in two years. Her camera remained switched off throughout the address.

Hasina delivered a 25-minute speech. Former Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury were also present during the virtual meeting.

Shakib continued playing cricket even after becoming an MP

Even after being elected to Parliament, Shakib continued to play international cricket and participate in T20 leagues. He also faced criticism during the 2024 uprising in Bangladesh.

During the student-led protests against the government job quota system, Shakib was accused of remaining silent because he was an Awami League MP.

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, several Awami League leaders’ and MPs’ homes were attacked across Bangladesh. Shakib’s house in Magura was also targeted, though he was not at home at the time.

Murder case filed against Shakib, similar to Sheikh Hasina

After the August 2024 coup, Shakib Al Hasan left Bangladesh and was not arrested. Later, several criminal cases were filed against him, including a murder case linked to the death of a man during the student protests.

Shakib was abroad when the cases were registered, and Bangladeshi police were unable to arrest him. (Bhaskar English)

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan announced on Thursday, October 17, that he will not be travelling to Dhaka, raising doubts about his ability to play in his final Test match against South Africa, which is scheduled to begin on November 21 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The 37-year-old was scheduled to join the Dubai-to-New York trip, but he has been requested not to.

There are questions regarding Shakib’s plans to travel home since the Test match is less than four days away from starting. Shakib, who was born in Magura, was included in Bangladesh’s side for the first Test match against the Proteas on Wednesday.

It has been discovered that Shakib’s final Test match at home could spark protests. Shakib had previously voiced his reservations about going back to Bangladesh in the midst of the student uprising against the Awami League administration. There is currently no guarantee that he will return to Bangladesh.

During the protests, Shakib was also charged for his involvement in a murder case. He was promised a secure route back to Bangladesh, but rumours have it that protests have flared up again. An outfit called “Mirpur Chhatro Janata” notified the BCB that if Shakib performed in Mirpur, there would be demonstrations. Following the India Test in Chennai, Shakib expressed his wish to play his final Test at home. He added that his final Tw20 International match was in the West Indies and United Arab Emirates.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan caused a stir during the first Test against Pakistan, by hurling the ball in frustration after Mohammad Rizwan pulled out of a delivery.

Umpire Richard Kettleborough was not impressed and gave Shakib a stern talking-to before signalling dead ball.

Shakib appeared to apologise after the conversation, but he is still liable to be sanctioned after this match.

The captain of the Bangladesh men’s national cricket team, Shakib Al Hasan, triggered a huge controversy as he slapped a fan, not long before the news of him winning a parliament seat in his country emerged. Shakib, who is known to lose his cool on the field as well, could be seen giving a hard slap to a fan while being surrounded by a huge number of people. Though it isn’t known exactly when and where the incident took place, it has been claimed by a section of social media users that the altercation might have taken place about a week before the election results came out.

It has been claimed that Shakib slapped the fan in the video during an incident at one of the polling stations. As the Bangladesh star arrived to cast his vote, he was surrounded by fans, and the situation got out of control after a fan tried to grab him from behind. Shakib then decided to slap the fan to handle the situation.

As for the election, Shakib beat his rival by a margin of more than 150,000 votes in his constituency in the western town of Magura, the district’s chief administrator Abu Naser Beg said. “It was a landslide victory,” he said. There is no immediate comment from the cricketer, a candidate of the ruling Awami League party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is herself widely expected to win a fifth term in power after the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the vote.

Shakib, speaking ahead of the election, conceded he was not facing any serious obstacle but told AFP the contest still made him anxious.

“The competition and challenges are always there, be it a small team or big team,” he said.

Shakib’s campaign obliged him to take a temporary leave of absence from cricket.

He has bristled at the suggestion he would not be able to balance his duties as a lawmaker and a cricket captain.

“Did I retire?” he asked during campaigning. “If I haven’t retired, then where does this question come from?”

Shakib is the only person to have been ranked the number-one all-rounder in all three formats simultaneously by the International Cricket Council. (NDTV)

Bangladeshi cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan won a parliamentary seat on Sunday in the general election that the opposition had boycotted.

The versatile 36-year-old batsman, who leads the team in all formats, defeated his rival by a wide margin of over 150,000 votes in the Magura constituency in the western town, according to Abu Naser Beg, the district’s top administrator.

Beg called the triumph a “landslide victory,” saying it was clear that Shakib had succeeded. The cricket player, who ran as a candidate for the ruling Awami League party led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has not yet responded, though.

The Prime Minister is widely anticipated to secure a fifth term in power, especially since the main opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), chose to boycott the election.

Shakib said that he was nervous about the competition but that he did not see any major barriers in the run-up to the election.

He denied claims that he couldn’t successfully juggle his jobs as a lawmaker and cricket captain, even though he took a brief break from the sport to focus on his campaign, underlining that he had not retired.

Among Shakib’s achievements is that, according to the International Cricket Council, he is the first person to ever hold the top spot for all-rounders in each of the three forms of cricket at the same time. He became well-known as a youngster, enrolling in the top sports academy in the nation, and at the age of 19, he made his batting all-around debut for his country in 2006. (Dunya)

An injury to his left Index finger has ruled Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Shakib suffered the injury while batting in Bangladesh’s penultimate league stage game against Sri Lanka in Delhi on 6 November 2023.

An X-ray after the game confirmed a fracture which has ruled him out of Bangladesh’s last match of the tournament against Australia in Pune on 11 November.

National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan gave further details on the injury.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers,” he said.

“He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab.”

Shakib hit a match-winning 82 from 65 balls, comprising 12 fours and two sixes, to guide his side to a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. Earlier in the day, he recorded figures of 2/57 with the ball. The fine all-round performance in a tense clash fetched him the Player of the Match award. (ICC)
