The Colombo High Court today (11) rejected the appeal filed by Shashi Weerawansa against the two‑year prison sentence and fine imposed for possessing an illegal foreign travel document.

Delivering the judgment, High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne confirmed the verdict previously issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

In 2022, the Magistrate’s Court found Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former minister Wimal Weerawansa, guilty of the charge and sentenced her to two years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 100,000.

Today’s ruling upholds the earlier decision, leaving the prison term and financial penalty in place. (Newswire)

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today fixed July 24 for the further trial of a case filed against Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, over allegations of obtaining a diplomatic passport using forged documents.

The order was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusawithana when the case was taken up today.

Shashi Weerawansa, who is out on bail, appeared before court.

During an earlier hearing, the defence sought access to inspect a computer system linked to documents connected to the case, arguing that the documents were computer-generated and that the trial could not proceed without such access under the Evidence Ordinance.

However, the Deputy Solicitor General appearing for the Criminal Investigation Department told court today that the documents were not computer-generated but had been scanned and stored in a database.

The Deputy Solicitor General also informed court that a notice under the Evidence (Special Provisions) Act would be filed to facilitate the defence request to inspect the relevant computer system.

Defence counsel said submissions on the matter would be made through a motion.

The Magistrate thereafter ordered the case to be called again on July 24. (Newswire)
