The Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow says discussions are underway with Russia to enable 700 more employment opportunities for Sri Lankan skilled seamstresses.

According to Daily News, the Sri Lankan Embassy stated that discussions are being held with the regional government authorities in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

The discussions are part of measures taken to initiate direct employment opportunities for Sri Lankan skilled migrant workers in the Russian Federation for the first time in history.

The employment opportunities were initiated in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Agency (SLFEA), a fully-owned state organization in Sri Lanka.

Under this initiative, the first group consisting of 58 seamstresses reached the Russian Federation on August 2. The group will be employed at two renowned textile manufacturing plants located in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The recruitment comes after the Embassy facilitated the employers to enter into agreements with the SLFEA to employ the selected seamstresses without the involvement of intermediate agencies.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow further stated that it is in the process of liaising with relevant authorities to devise a mechanism to create more employment opportunities for Sri Lankan skilled migrant workers.

The Embassy added that the measures will see employment opportunities in the Russian Federation and other countries of accreditation, under several technical categories. (NewsWire)
