The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has partnered with The Barn House Sri Lanka to introduce “Whispers of Ceylon,” a novel wedding and engagement offering, in a strategic move to attract the growing Polish tourism market.

According to the SLTPB, this initiative, launched on 24th August 2025, with a Polish couple, aims to position Sri Lanka as a premier destination for high-end European weddings by blending indigenous customs with luxury and eco-conscious hospitality.

The Key objective of this move was to offer a novel wedding experience, and also a new concept for the foreign travellers, who would like to have their special day planned in Sri Lanka. This will highlight that there is a niche market for high-end tourists, especially with the native community (Vedda) in Sri Lanka, while having the experience of getting involved with their customs, traditions and rituals. This is a great initiative to preserve Sri Lanka’s old traditional heritage of the native communities along with their respective rituals.

The Polish market has been identified as an emerging and promising segment for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. There has been a notable increase in Polish tourists visiting the island for leisure over the past few years. This upward trend is evident in the arrival statistics, which place Poland among the top 15 countries for tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka.

Significant Growth in Polish Tourist Arrivals

Tourist arrivals from Poland have shown a remarkable increase, underscoring the success of Sri Lanka’s promotional efforts in this key market. The growth has been particularly significant in recent years.

As of  27th of August, 2025, a total of 32,442 Polish tourists have visited Sri Lanka, marking a significant step towards the year-end target of 50,000 arrivals.

SLTPB’s Promotional Push in Poland

To further cultivate this growing market, the SLTPB has implemented a series of targeted promotional activities throughout since 2021, These initiatives include:

  • Celebrity and Influencer Collaborations: Partnering with prominent Polish personalities such as Ms. Doda Queen and Mr. & Ms. Pazura, as well as social media influencers.
  • Media Partnerships: Collaborating with the photography and film entity “projektfotografia.pl and projektfilm.pl,” featuring on the popular travel program Eska TV, and securing placements in high-end publications like Vogue Magazine.
  • Event Sponsorship: Partnering with the “Pik Nik Nad Odra” and “TT Warsaw travel fair” events to enhance Sri Lanka’s visibility in Poland.

These promotions are designed to appeal to the modern Polish traveller, particularly those in the middle to upper-income bracket who seek meaningful, nature-based, and culturally immersive experiences.

“Whispers of Ceylon”: A Unique Cultural Experience

The “Whispers of Ceylon” offering was a direct response to this demand, providing a unique wedding experience that revives the traditions of Sri Lanka’s indigenous Vedda community. Set against the lush backdrop of Sherwood by The Barn, the ceremony immerses couples in sacred rituals and time-honoured customs, creating a culturally meaningful and environmentally conscious celebration.

The Barn House Sri Lanka and its sister venue, Sherwood by The Barn, are recognised for their commitment to sustainable hospitality, featuring eco-friendly designs and upcycled architecture. This new initiative not only offers a one-of-a-kind wedding journey—from traditional attire and blessings to native performances—but also aims to preserve and share the island’s rich cultural heritage with a global audience. By developing this product, The Barn House is helping to cement Sri Lanka’s reputation as a top-tier destination for unique European weddings and engagements. This initiative also highlights the potential of wedding tourism as a significant niche market for the country. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has announced the successful completion of filming for ‘Serendipitous Journeys’, a Chinese reality series produced by Mango TV, one of China’s most influential digital platforms.

In a statement, the SLTPB said that this marks the first time a project of this scale and visibility has been filmed in Sri Lanka for a mainstream Chinese audience.

“Serendipitous Journeys”, a cross-cultural reality series led by acclaimed producer Li Chao, features Chinese celebrity couple Huang Zitao and Xu Yiyang as they immerse themselves in the everyday lives of locals in two countries—Tanzania and Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan segment will consist of six 90-minute episodes, filmed entirely in and around Trincomalee, and is set to premiere in July 2025.

The series takes a deeply human approach as the celebrity couple “swaps lives” with a local family, running a homestay and adopting their routines and livelihoods. The Eastern coastal town of Trincomalee was chosen for its serene beaches during this season and for its untapped potential in tourism promotion, offering a contrast to the already popular southern belt.

Commenting on the collaboration, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, said, “This production is more than a television show. It is becoming a cultural bridge connecting the hearts of Sri Lanka and China. With professionalism and genuine respect, the crew embraced our people and captured the essence of our Nation of Smiles. Through the lens of youth and authentic storytelling, this project fosters deeper mutual understanding and friendship, inspiring more Chinese travellers to experience the warmth and charm of Sri Lanka first-hand.”

With a combined fan base of over 120 million followers, Huang Zitao and Xu Yiyang bring unprecedented exposure for Sri Lanka. Their presence and storytelling through this series create a major opportunity for strengthening tourism ties between Sri Lanka and China, especially as lifestyle and immersive travel gain popularity among Chinese outbound travellers.

The SLTPB states as filming in Trincomalee wraps up, additional visual segments from around the country are currently being captured for inclusion in the episodes. This added footage will further enrich the storytelling and showcase the full spectrum of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and cultural diversity.

The SLTPB added that it views this production as a strategic leap in positioning Sri Lanka on the global map through soft power and narrative-based promotion. It also emphasized its intention to pursue more initiatives and partnerships of this kind to elevate Sri Lanka’s global image and attract quality tourism.

Mango TV is part of the state-owned Hunan Broadcasting System and is known for producing high-quality, youth-oriented content that reaches wide audiences across China and beyond. Its international collaborations are carefully selected, adding significant value to the destinations featured. The involvement of a government-affiliated media platform further strengthens bilateral engagement, signalling confidence in Sri Lanka’s safety, hospitality, and production infrastructure. Emirates Airlines and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) renewed their partnership at the Arabian Travel Market 2025, aimed at further developing the country’s tourism and trade industries.

The partnership was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties, which was signed by Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates’ Senior Vice President of Commercial West Asia & Indian Ocean and Sampath Nissanka, Managing Director of the SLTPB.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer; Alexi Gunasekera, Consul General-designate of Sri Lanka to Dubai and the Northern Emirates in addition to other representatives of the airline and tourism board.

First inked in 2022, the renewed MoU will strengthen the collaboration between Emirates and SLTPB, with both the airline and tourism body reiterating their commitment to actively promote Sri Lanka as a destination to key markets within Emirates’ network. Through joint initiatives, such as developing excursions and familiarization trips to promote the island nation to key feeder markets, Emirates and SLTPB aim to grow the tourism industry of the popular Indian Ocean destination by showcasing the destination to customers across the airline’s global network.

The joint efforts to boost the nation’s tourist industry have supported a steady increase in inbound traffic into the island, which recorded just over 2 million visitors in 2024. Between April 2024 and March 2025, Emirates carried over 240,000 passengers into Sri Lanka from key markets around its network including Russia, the UK, Germany, Australia, China, and the US, among others.

Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial West Asia & Indian Ocean said:  “We have been serving Sri Lanka for 39 years, and it continues to be an important market for us. We reaffirm our commitment to connecting Sri Lanka to the world through additional flights to increase connectivity and passenger convenience, the deployment of our latest aircraft, the A350, and by renewing our MoU with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau as testament to the efforts we are investing into the nation’s tourism industry.

“Through our joint collaboration, we have seen a significant rise in tourism levels in the country and we look forward to another year of shared success in the promotion of Sri Lanka as a key leisure destination across our diverse network.”

Sampath Nissanka, Managing Director – SLTPB said: “Our close collaboration with Emirates has already yielded remarkable growth in tourism to our beautiful island nation, and we are excited to embark on another year of mutual success. This joint commitment to promoting Sri Lanka across Emirates’ extensive global network will undoubtedly showcase the unique charm and allure that makes Sri Lanka a premium leisure destination for travellers worldwide.”

“Sri Lanka, a jewel in the Indian Ocean, boasts a rich tapestry of attractions that cater to every type of traveller and Emirates’ extensive network, connecting over 140 destinations across six continents, provides unparalleled access to Sri Lanka for travellers worldwide. This collaboration will strategically highlight Sri Lanka’s diverse offerings to a global audience, tapping into key markets and attracting discerning travellers seeking authentic and enriching experiences. We are confident that this partnership will not only increase tourist arrivals but also showcase the warmth of our hospitality and the incredible potential of Sri Lanka as a leading tourism destination in the years to come.”

Emirates recently launched its A350 services on flights EK654/655 with 6-weekly flights, to increase to daily on 7 May. Colombo is also one of the destinations that is set to receive the Boeing 777 with refreshed interiors, from 10 August on its daily EK650/651 flights.

Emirates began operations to Sri Lanka in April 1986 and has consistently supported the country’s tourism and export industries through passenger and cargo services. Earlier this year, the airline added a fourth daily flight and deployed its latest aircraft to Sri Lanka, increasing seat capacity on the route by 30 percent. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has unveiled a new campaign under the slogan – Sri Lanka “you will come back for more”- at the International French Travel Market (IFTM) trade show in Paris, France.

Issuing a statement, the SLTPB said Sri Lanka had a strong momentum at the IFTM Top Resa with the presence of 27 exhibiting companies.

Sri Lanka is back after 2021 with its new destination branding ‘You will come back for more”. This is the first travel fair participation after the new brand identity was adopted.

France is among the top seven tourists generating markets for Sri Lanka with over 44,000 tourists accounted for the first nine months of 2023, just behind the UK and Germany from Europe.

Tourism in Sri Lanka is back on track, and it was proved by the presence of 27 co-exhibitors at IFTM Top Resa, the SLTPB said.

“We launched our first phase of the campaign ‘seeing is believing’ which showed that the situation in the country is normal. We are now unveiling a new campaign, the slogan Sri Lanka “you will come back for more” which we were presenting at IFTM to the trade visitors,’’ Chairman of SLTPB, Chalaka Gajabahu explained.

The Sri Lanka pavilion at IFTM was inaugurated by lighting the oil lamp headed by Manisha Gunasekara, Ambassador to Sri Lanka Embassy in France followed by Representatives from Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, SriLankan Airlines, Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and Tourist Hoteliers Association of Sri Lanka (THASL).

Sri Lanka was able to attract a high level of attention from the trade and travel visitors who attended the event. The Sri Lanka pavilion highlighted many aspects of its potential culture, beauty, Ayurveda and many more which Sri Lanka would offer as a tourism destination. Sri Lanka stands optimized the “Sri Lanka -You will come back for more” vivid sights to attract the potential visitor segments. At the Sri Lanka pavilion, Ceylon tea was served to the visitors with a view of promoting Ceylon tea in the French market. (NewsWire)
