Two key pieces of legislation, the Sri Lanka Cricket Bill and the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill,  were presented to Parliament today (06).

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage presented the Sri Lanka Cricket Bill, which seeks to introduce a new framework for the governance, regulation, promotion, development and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.

The proposed legislation is intended to restructure Sri Lanka Cricket and strengthen principles including good governance, integrity, transparency, accountability and inclusivity. It also seeks to protect the sport from corruption and other malpractices.

Meanwhile, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara presented the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, which seeks to repeal and replace the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1979.

The proposed anti-terrorism legislation introduces a new legal framework covering terrorism and related offences, including provisions governing the identification, arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution and punishment of individuals accused of such offences.

The Bill also seeks to protect Sri Lanka’s national security and the public from terrorist acts committed within or outside the country and prevent Sri Lankan territory from being used to prepare terrorist activities overseas.

Both Bills were presented for their First Reading in Parliament today. (Newswire)
