Sri Lanka Police have uncovered a financial fraud racket involving fake websites and a malicious mobile application disguised as a service of SriLankan Airlines.

According to the Police Media Division, fraudsters contacted individuals via WhatsApp accounts, directing them to download a mobile app named SriLankan.apk through three fraudulent websites, srilankan.wuozgo.cc, srilankan.vaco.cc, and srilankan.krgo.cc.

Investigations revealed that the app functions as a banking trojan, granting remote access to mobile phones and exposing sensitive personal data.

Police said the scheme enables criminals to obtain One‑Time Passwords (OTPs), bank account details, and biometric authentication data such as fingerprints and facial recognition. 

Using this information, they gain unauthorized access to banking apps and transfer funds fraudulently to other accounts.

The following telephone numbers have been linked to the operation: 077‑4558361, 011‑7771979, 074‑1142208, 077‑5791209, and 074‑3268200.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (April 17) rejected the bail application of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena, who is currently in remand custody over allegations of accepting bribes during the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the national carrier.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after reviewing submissions made by officials of the Bribery Commission and the suspect’s legal team.

SriLankan Airlines has announced a significant expansion of its Colombo–Melbourne route, increasing weekly services to 10 flights starting 2 August 2026.

SriLankan Airlines and the Government of Sri Lanka have announced that they have reached an agreement in principle with the Ad Hoc Group of Bondholders on the financial parameters of the restructuring of its USD 175 million in Guaranteed Bonds due June 2024.

Issuing a joint statement, the two parties said that the agreement was reached with six members of the Ad Hoc Group of Bondholders following restricted discussions during the restricted period, between 23 October and 19 November 2025.

SriLankan Airlines was joined by its financial and legal advisors, Lazard and Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, respectively, while the Ad Hoc Group of Bondholders were joined by their legal advisor, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. The Ad Hoc Group of Bondholders controls approximately 55% the aggregate outstanding amount of the USD 175 million in Guaranteed Bonds (Notes). 

Under the in-principle agreed terms, and subject to the successful implementation of the restructuring in accordance with such terms, the Government will be discharged from its liability pursuant to the guarantee and benefit from substantial debt and immediate liquidity relief to maintain the hard-fought long-term sustainability of its public finances.

Under the agreed terms, the restructuring will include a 15% haircut on the total claim amount of the Notes, with the remaining balance to be exchanged for a combination of cash and medium-term Government bonds carrying a 4% interest rate.  

The in-principle agreed terms for the restructuring remain subject to final approval from Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers, as well as the non-objections of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Sri Lanka’s official Creditor Committee, pursuant to the Government’s commitments taken in the context of Sri Lanka’s overall public debt restructuring exercise. 

The terms of the in-principle agreed restructuring have been communicated to Sri Lanka’s Official Creditor Committee for their non-objection, as well as the IMF, to ensure compliance with Sri Lanka’s long-term debt sustainability. Upon their confirmation, the Parties expect to be able to implement the transaction by the end of the year. 

The implementation of the in-principle agreed terms will allow the company to complete the full normalization of its relations with its external creditors and to focus on ensuring the continuation of its operations.

SriLankan Airlines and the Government of Sri Lanka have announced the unsuccessful conclusion of initial debt restructuring talks with a group representing over 50% of the airline’s US$175 million guaranteed bonds due in June 2024.

The restricted discussions, held between July 28 and August 1, included the company, the government, and six members of the Ad Hoc Group of Bondholders. Despite what both sides described as “constructive” talks, no agreement was reached on restructuring terms.

SriLankan Airlines presented a proposal offering bondholders a combination of cash—up to US$60 million via a tender offer—and an exchange into government bonds maturing in 2028. In return, holders would accept a haircut, receiving 80 cents on the dollar for voluntarily restructured bonds or 70 cents under mandatory terms triggered by collective action clauses.

The bondholder group countered with a proposal seeking full principal recovery via an exchange into 2028 sovereign bonds, payment of all accrued and unpaid interest in cash, and an early bird consent fee of 3% of the principal.

After reviewing the counterproposal, the airline and the government said the terms were “far from what is expected” and not viable within Sri Lanka’s IMF-backed debt sustainability framework. Consequently, the parties agreed to terminate the discussions.

The government noted that over 98% of eligible public debt has already been addressed through prior agreements, of which 92% has been implemented. It reiterated its commitment to equal treatment among all creditors and emphasized that SriLankan Airlines’ bonds are part of the broader restructuring perimeter.

Former Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, Nishantha Wickramasinghe, who was arrested by the Bribery Commission over corruption charges, has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. 

Wickramasinghe, who is the brother of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation by the Bribery Commission. 

Three corruption-related charges were filed against Wickramasinghe related to incidents that occurred during his tenure at the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, in 2014, resulting in financial losses to the government.

The charges filed by the Bribery Commission are as follows;

1. Flight Diversion Loss – On January 22, 2014, flight UL319, scheduled to operate from Kuala Lumpur to Katunayake, was diverted, reportedly causing a financial loss of USD 4,512 to the state.
2. Passenger Diversion Loss – On January 26, 2014, 75 passengers travelling from the Maldives to France via Colombo were sent from flight UL563. The commission alleges this action led to a loss of USD 19,160.
3. Misuse of State Funds – On December 19, 2014, Rs. 1.25 million of government funds were allegedly used for election campaign activities at the 18th Mile Post Grounds in Katunayake, in support of the former President. (Newswire)

Three Pakistani youths who had behaved in an unruly manner on a SriLankan Airlines flight, have been released after a severe warning by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

The incident had occurred when the accused, three friends who had arrived in Sri Lanka on a tour, were leaving for Bangkok, Thailand via a SriLankan Airlines flight.

However, an argument over the flight seat had escalated into an argument affecting flight operations.

The accused had no previous criminal records, had extended an apology over the incident, and had also pleaded guilty.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has arrived at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to provide a statement over investigations related to a SriLankan Airlines Airbus deal.  

The CID’s investigation focuses on the alleged corruption surrounding the 2013 transaction to purchase 10 Airbus aircraft.

The deal has come under scrutiny after a UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation revealed that 16.84 million in bribes were paid as part of the agreement.

Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Harshana Suriyapperuma says national carrier, SriLankan Airlines is facing a large debt due to political interference of the past regimes, resulting in an ongoing case in international courts.

Addressing the Parliament, Deputy Minister Suriyapperuma said SriLankan Airlines has been found not only to be involved in corruption at the state level but also at the international level. 

“Currently, there is an ongoing case in the international court over claims that commissions were sought during the purchase of planes. Planes have been obtained on lease at exorbitant rates beyond the existing market rates,” he revealed. 

The Deputy Minister further said that the actions and decisions over the past few decades by former regimes related to SriLankan Airlines must be taken into consideration when looking into its debt.

Outlining the measures taken by the government to address the debt, the Deputy Minister of Finance said that they have planned to introduce a 05-year programme from 2025 to 2030.

He further explained that despite the government allocating Rs. 20 billion in its 2025 budget for SriLankan Airlines, the funds will not be utilised for the airlines’ management of operating expenses and that its management is tasked with making it a self-sustaining entity.

Deputy Minister Suriyapperuma also revealed that discussions have commenced with relevant stakeholders to restructure the debt, under which loans have been obtained in US Dollars.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced today that the government has allocated Rs. 20,000 million for the settlement of the debt of national carrier, SriLankan Airlines. 

Presenting the Budget 2025 in Parliament today, the President pointed out that SriLankan Airlines performs a leading service in the transportation of passengers and cargo by air. 

He further said the previous Governments’ attempts to divest state ownership and attract private investment for the national carrier have been unsuccessful. 

The President said, therefore, that the government has decided to sign an agreement with the banks linked to the debt and set aside Rs. 10,000 million for loan capital repayment in 2025 and Rs. 10,000 million for interest payments.
