French authorities have announced plans to ban social media for under-15s and the sale of knives to minors after the murder of a teaching assistant by a 14-year-old boy plunged the country into shock.

A secondary school pupil was arrested on Tuesday after killing a 31-year-old school assistant with a knife during a bag search in Nogent in eastern France.

Friends and well-wishers left flowers and messages of support in front of the secondary school struck by the tragedy.

“We share your pain,” read one message.

Laurence Raclot, who knew the teaching assistant, Melanie, said she was “stunned”.

“She was great with kids,” Raclot said. “In a quiet little town, we never would have thought this could happen.”

A former hairdresser, Melanie had retrained and worked at the school since September. She was the mother of a four-year-old boy and a councillor in a village near Nogent.

“There are no words,” added another local, Sabrina Renault. “It’s really sad for her whole family, for that little boy who’s left without his mum.”

Pupils and parents were seen entering and leaving the school, where a psychological support unit has been set up.

The suspect will remain in police custody for a further 24 hours, until Thursday morning, a police source told AFP on Wednesday. Little information has been released about his motive.

‘Cannot wait’

In the wake of the attack, authorities promised a raft of measures to tackle knife crime among children.

“I am proposing banning social media for children under 15,” President Emmanuel Macron said on X on Tuesday evening. “Platforms have the ability to verify age. Let’s do it,” he added.

Backed by France and Spain, Greece has spearheaded a proposal for how the EU should limit children’s use of online platforms as evidence shows that social media can have negative effects on children’s mental and physical health.

Macron said on Tuesday that if no progress was made within several months, then France would go ahead with the ban unilaterally.

“We cannot wait,” he told broadcaster France 2.

France has in recent years seen several attacks on teachers and pupils by other schoolchildren.

In March, police started random searches for knives and other weapons concealed in bags at and around schools.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister François Bayrou‘s office said a ban on the sale of knives to minors will be implemented by a decree issued within the next two weeks.

Speaking to broadcaster TF1 on Tuesday evening, Bayrou said that the measure would come into force “immediately”.

The list will include “any knife that can be used as a weapon”, he said.

He also said parents and educators should be watching for “signs that a teenager is not doing well”, while acknowledging that there was a shortage of psychologists.

Bayrou has also called for a trial of metal detectors in schools.

‘Overexposure to screens’

Education Minister Élisabeth Borne called for a minute’s silence to be held in all French schools at midday on Thursday to honour the memory of the teaching assistant.

“The entire educational community is in shock, as is the whole nation,” she told France Inter radio on Wednesday.

Borne said she was “open to anything” to improve safety but added that ceramic blades would be invisible to metal detectors.

She also said that young people should be protected from “overexposure to screens”.

But trade unions said they were not sure how these proposals would be implemented and enforced.

“Teaching assistants have primarily educational duties within the school environment,” said Sophie Venetitay, general secretary of the SNES-FSU teachers’ union.

But, she added, “little by little, we have seen attempts to turn them into security guards.”

Remy Reynaud of the CGT Educ’action union criticised the government’s decision to introduce bag searches outside schools.

“They increase tensions,” he said.

“School management are pressuring teaching assistants to participate in the searches, which is not part of their duties.” (France 24)

A 48-year-old man is currently receiving treatment under police protection at the Badulla General Hospital after being critically injured in a stabbing incident involving his elder brother.

The altercation occurred on the pavement near Royal Road, close to the Badulla bus stand.

Police Sergeant Nilantha, who was on duty nearby, managed to subdue the attacker despite the risk to his own life, a move that has drawn widespread praise.

The Police said preliminary investigations reveal that the younger brother first attacked the elder brother, who then turned the same weapon on his assailant in retaliation.

Both sustained injuries and were admitted to Badulla Hospital under police watch. The two men are reportedly residents of Amunupitiya in the Badulla area.

The Badulla Police have launched further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)

A prominent bishop in Sydney, Australia has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed multiple times during a service.

Video, posted on social media, shows Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel allegedly being attacked at Wakeley’s Christ The Good Shepherd Church while delivering his sermon on Monday night.

The confronting footage shows the Bishop speaking when a younger man dressed in black calmly walks up to him.

The Bishop looks at the man, who then makes a stabbing motion to the face and neck area.

The Bishop then falls to the ground and his condition is not known.

Screams are heard from the crowd, as several people rush forward to try to help.

The camera then pans away.

The footage was taken from a livestream from the church’s YouTube page.

NSW Ambulance told NCA NewsWire paramedics were called to the scene about 7.15pm on Monday.

A spokesman said a man aged in his 50s was taken to Liverpool Hospital with multiple stab wounds.

Three other people were also injured and are still being treated at the scene.

A man aged in his 30s suffered multiple lacerations, a man in his 20s recieved a cut to his hand, and a man in his 60s was wounded to his arm.

Dozens of police raced to the scene where it is understood an angry crowd has gathered.

In a statement, NSW Police said an operation was underway in Wakeley, following reports of a stabbing.

“Officers attached to Fairfield City Police Area Command attended a location on Welcome St, Wakeley following reports a number of people were stabbed,” police said.

“Officers arrested a male and he is assisting police with inquiries.

“The injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries and are being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“The community is urged to avoid the area.

“More information will be provided once it becomes available.”

The attack comes just three days after six people were killed during a stabbing massacre at Sydney’s Bondi Westfield Shopping Centre.

There is nothing to suggest the two events are linked.

The Bishop gained prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic after describing Sydney’s lockdown as “mass slavery”.

He also claimed vaccines were futile because living “normally” would boost immunity.

“Are we humans? Because we are being treated like animals,” Bishop Emmanuel said in a sermon in 2021.

“They are encouraging people to go and take a vaccine and stay at home. They have had enough.”

He has a large following on social media, including TikTok and Facebook. (news.com.au)

Details have emerged on the 19-year-old boy of Sri Lankan origin behind the mass stabbing of a Sri Lankan family in Ottawa, Canada, with reports claiming that he was acquainted with the victims.

The suspect, identified as Febrio de-Zoysa, has been charged with murder over the incident reported late on Wednesday, which was described as a ‘terrible tragedy’ by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The victims were a woman (35) and her four young children aged between 4 years and 2 ½ months, and her female friend. The woman’s husband who sustained serious injuries is hospitalised and in stable condition.

According to Canadian Police officials, de-Zoysa had been living with the victims for quite some time, while they had also celebrated his 19th birthday a few days ago.

The suspect has no prior criminal records and was living in Canada after arriving to pursue his education.

A monk from the Buddhist monastery attended by the victims and a friend of the father who survived the attack said his friend had disclosed that nothing seemed wrong leading to the rampage.

The monk further revealed that according to his friend, there had been no issues between the family and de-Zoysa.

The teenager had recently moved into their basement to pursue his education in Ottawa, while the victims had also met his parents while in Sri Lanka.

However, the monk said, his friend had disclosed that de-Zoysa was facing problems in school and had recently become suicidal.

His friend had also revealed that the suspect had attacked his family and had thereafter, attacked him the moment he had returned home after a cleaning job.

Febrio de-Zoysa has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

His next court appearance is fixed for March 14, 2024. (NewsWire/ foreign media)
