Trade Unions of several essential services are engaged in a strike action today against the government’s new tax policy and other issues.

The strike action is being carried out by trade unions from the ports, petroleum, power, water, banks, universities, railway, and telecommunications sectors.

A spokesman for the Port Unions Niroshan Gorakanage said that the strike action was launched at 07.00 am today and will continue until 07.00 am tomorrow (02).

“All preparations have been made to carry out the strike action within the port’s premises. This is a one-day match. This will be followed by a test match soon. Therefore, the authorities must respond if they want to avoid it,” he warned.

However, the health, postal, teachers, and principals trade unions have decided not to halt activities, even though they have extended their support for the strike action.

The said trade unions have announced that they will continue with their activities but will display black arm and headbands, as well as black flags to express their support for the strike action.

Vice-Chairman of the Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union, BOC Branch Anuradha Niraj stated that only essential services will operate today while all other bank services have been suspended as part of the strike action.

Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has announced that it will engage in the protest march that has been organized for today.

The Ceylon Electricity Board Trade Union Unity (CEBTUU) has launched a strike action today (27) by applying for sick leave and refraining to report to work.

CEBTUU President Malaka Wickramasinghe told the media that the strike action has been launched over several issues including the government’s tax policy and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

Malaka Wickramasinghe stated that the trade unions are also demanding annual bonuses and medical payments, which were not paid in 2022 and 2021.

He added that the CEB should also revise its calculation method pertaining to tariffs by using a better method that would balance and grant relief to the consumers.

More than 6,000 members attached to a total of 12 trade unions will apply for sick leave and engage in the trade union action at 10.30 a.m. on Monday, Wickramasinghe said.

The CEBTUU President said that the striking CEB engineers have also been summoned to Colombo for a protest.

The CEBTUU warned that if the authorities fail to respond, their trade union action would be expanded countrywide. (NewsWire)
