Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujeewa Senasinghe claimed today that the government was facing a worsening economic situation and predicted that the US dollar, currently trading at around Rs. 338, could rise beyond Rs. 360 within the next five months.

Addressing Parliament, Senasinghe alleged that the current administration had “mismanaged” the situation and warned of a difficult economic period ahead.

He also took aim at President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, claiming that the President would seek support for a national government within the next four months.

“Anura Kumara is saying not only I cannot do the job, but even my people cannot do it,” Senasinghe said, while predicting that a national government proposal would emerge in the near future. (Newswire)

Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has responded to claims by the opposition on the expenditure incurred related to the remains of the deceased Iranian Sailors, stating that the expenses are borne by the government on a ‘humanitarian basis’.

Addressing the media, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujeewa Senasinghe questioned the expenses for the cold freezers to store the remains of the deceased Iranian Sailors.

“We do not know what agreement was reached by the President with the USA and India. The government has got involved in an unwanted problem. There are over 80 bodies. How long will we be required to keep the bodies? How long will we have to use the cold freezers? What is the expense incurred? There are reports that the rescued sailors are wanted by Iran and the USA. We do not know how we are going to prepare for this,” he said.

Responding to the SJB MP, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the expenses for the maintenance of the bodies of the sailors and related activities are being borne by the government.

“Until those bodies remain in Sri Lanka, until the sailors remain under the responsibility of the Sri Lankan Government, and until the injured Iranian soldiers are admitted in our hospitals, the Government of Sri Lanka will take up the expenses on a humanitarian basis,” he said, in a post on social media. Opposition MP Sujeewa Semasinghe has written to Sri Lanka’s ambassadors and several international organisations, raising concerns over what he described as threats to democratic governance and the rule of law in the country.

In letters dated Jan. 22, 2026, Semasinghe addressed Sri Lanka’s high commissioners and ambassadors, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Commonwealth, the Asian Development Bank and other international bodies.

He raised concerns over the prolonged vacancy in the post of Auditor General, claiming the failure to appoint a permanent or acting Auditor General undermines parliamentary financial oversight and weakens corruption controls.

Semasinghe also alleged political interference involving Sri Lanka’s Attorney General, claiming there were attempts to undermine the independence of the Attorney General’s Department and the judiciary.

He urged the international community to raise the issues with Sri Lankan authorities and emphasised the need to uphold constitutional checks and balances.

Copies of the letters were also sent to the Chief Justice and the Attorney General for information. (Newswire)

Member of Parliament Sujeewa Senasinghe appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today to provide a statement regarding an illegally assembled vehicle.

Having arrived this morning, Sujeewa Senasinghe left the CID after approximately three hours of questioning.

Speaking to the media, he stated that this was the fourth time he had been called in to record a statement and that the current government was targeting political figures.

Claiming that such actions are intended to discourage politicians from participating in politics, he emphasized his readiness to face any situation fearlessly.

“This is my fourth statement. Newspapers are falsely reporting that I refused to give a statement. If the country is genuinely being developed, that’s good. But development won’t happen by chasing behind us. I don’t know when this will end, but I will happily face this. Many people are becoming fed up with politics. It’s come to a point where good people are leaving, and thugs are treating politics as a profession,” he said. (Newswire)

SJB’s Sujeewa Senasinghe has filed a complaint under the Online Safety Act against a YouTube channel, alleging it spread false claims about him.

The petitioner informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that the YouTube channel, operated by a Switzerland-based individual, made defamatory accusations against him and disclosed his personal and private information.

The complaint also names Google as a respondent, the parent company of YouTube, with Senasinghe arguing that the company acted as an internet intermediary in this instance.

The YouTube channel alleged that Senasinghe owned and used an illegally assembled V8 Land Cruiser.

Other reports by the same channel linked the MP to the LTTE and made further accusations, which Senasinghe said were false and defamatory.

Speaking to the media, Senasinghe said he pursued legal action to set a precedent against misinformation and protect individuals from such false allegations. (Newswire)

Former MP Sujeewa Senasinghe’s controversial luxury vehicle, which was in court custody, has been released on a bond of Rs. 100 million.

The order was issued by the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.

Former MP Sujeewa Senasinghe’s luxury vehicle, worth around Rs. 100 million, was suspected to have been illegally assembled.

On 08 November, Senasinghe was directed to bring the SUV to the government analyst after a tip-off to the Walana Anti-Corruption Task Force raised suspicions about the vehicle’s assembly status.

Officials suspected that the Land Cruiser may have been reassembled.

On November 11, the Fort Magistrate’s Court ordered the CID to take the former MP’s vehicle into custody and produce it to the Government Analyst’s Department and obtain a report. (Newswire)
