Plans are underway to construct a nine-storey surgical ward complex at the Tangalle Base Hospital at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.09 billion, as part of efforts to expand healthcare services in the Hambantota District.

According to the Ministry of Health, construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026, with the project scheduled to be completed in four phases.

The proposed development was discussed during an inspection visit to the Tangalle Base Hospital by Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni on Wednesday (14).

During a meeting with hospital officials, attention was also focused on constructing a five-storey medical ward complex to address space limitations and improve patient care.

Discussions were also held on providing the hospital with a CT scanner and other modern medical equipment to strengthen diagnostic and treatment services.

The Tangalle Base Hospital, which has a capacity of 339 beds, is one of the main government healthcare institutions serving the Hambantota District.

The Deputy Minister also reviewed staff shortages, ambulance facilities and other essential resources required for the hospital’s daily operations.

Deputy Minister Wijemuni said the development projects would be carried out in coordination with the relevant Provincial Council, with financial support from the Central Government. (Newswire)

A 55‑year‑old luxury bus driver from Okawela has died after a packet of ‘ICE’ narcotics hidden inside his stomach ruptured, causing fatal poisoning.

According to reports, the Police said the driver, who was employed on a bus operating along the Tangalle–Makumbura route of the Southern Expressway, suddenly fell seriously ill shortly after the bus reached its destination on Monday (08).

He was rushed to the Tangalle Base Hospital but succumbed while receiving treatment.

A post‑mortem examination conducted at the Tangalle Hospital yesterday revealed two drug packets had been ingested and were found inside his stomach.
