It was revealed that the initiative will train 10,000 three-wheeler taxi drivers engaged in the tourism sector, covering all nine provinces of the island within this year.

The program, which aims to enhance the drivers’ attitudes and ethical conduct, is estimated to cost Rs. 25 million. Ten training sessions are scheduled to be conducted in each province as part of the island-wide initiative.

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the Motor Traffic Act, allowing the gross weight of electric three-wheelers, including the battery system, to be increased to 650 kilograms.

According to the government, the gross weight of three-wheelers manufactured as electric three-wheelers or converted from petrol or diesel-driven three-wheelers into electric three-wheelers has increased.

Due to this reason, the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted in August 2022 to revise the Motor Traffic Act, making 600 kilos the maximum gross weight of such electric Three-wheelers to solve the issues related to the provisions encountered during the registration of electric three-wheelers.

However, considering the facts of introduction of a battery system that enables long distance ride when charged, the requirement of a high capacity battery system for luxury electric three-wheelers with air conditioning facilities as well as considering the weight added when using electricity resistant breaks, the industrialists engaged in production and conversion industry of electricthree-wheelers in the local market have requested the Department of Motor Traffic to amend the provisions so that the gross weight of an electric three-wheeler will not exceed the weight limit of 650 kilos including the battery system.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers, considering the proposal forwarded by the Minister of Transport, decided to approve the amendment of the Motor Traffic Act, including the proposed changes. (Newswire)

The Western Province Threewheel Drivers & Owners Co-Operative Society Colombo says it will not reduce fares, despite the recent revision in fuel prices.

A representative of the Association told the media that it was not practical to reduce three-wheeler charges by 50 cents or Rs. 1, due to a Rs. 10 reduction in petrol price.

He further urged the government to regulate the three-wheeler taxi system to provide a more efficient service to the public.

“A litre of petrol has been reduced by Rs. 10. A three-wheeler can travel for 20 kilometres using a litre of petrol. Even if we reduce fares by Rs. 10, a kilometre charge is Rs. 50. Can we reduce this by 50 cents? This is not practical,” he added.

The decision comes as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) announced a reduction in fuel prices effective from midnight yesterday, with the Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) also matching their prices to the CPC. (Newswire)

The Sri Lanka Police has announced new regulations for organizations providing three-wheelers for rentals to tourists, in a bid to minimize road accidents.

According to the Police, along with an increase in tourists driving three-wheelers in Sri Lanka, the rate of accidents involving such three-wheelers has also gone up.

Inquiries into these incidents have found that the tourists do not possess the necessary training or licences to drive three-wheelers.

As such, the Sri Lanka Police has announced that a tourist must carry either one of the following three documents when renting three-wheelers;

  • A valid Sri Lankan driving licence
  • A valid international licence accepted in Sri Lanka (which includes the three-wheeler category)
  • A valid driving licence from their respective country

Stating that some three-wheeler rental companies are utilising the lack of proper documents to earn money, the Sri Lanka Police warned that legal action will be initiated for the failure to adhere to the new regulations.

In the event a tourist is found to be driving a three-wheeler without the essential licences, the Police have been authorized to record a statement from the owner of the three-wheeler and thereafter, file a case against them.

The Police further said that providing a three-wheeler to a person without a valid licence is a punishable offence, for which a fine of Rs. 25,000 can be imposed.

Companies providing three-wheelers on rentals to tourists have been urged to verify the necessary valid licences prior to renting out their vehicles. (Newswire)
