Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), MP Mano Ganesan, has requested the Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance (COPF) to inquire into the reallocation of funds set aside for the conduct of Provincial Council Elections.

In a letter addressed to COPF Chairman Harsha de Silva, dated June 01, 2026, Ganesan cited remarks reportedly made by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva, who stated that funds earmarked for Provincial Council Elections had been utilized by the Government for disaster‑rebuilding and related purposes.

Ganesan stressed that, to his knowledge, Parliament had not approved any transfer or reallocation of such funds to other expenditure heads. 

He warned that if the statement attributed to Tilvin Silva is accurate, it may indicate unauthorized use of public finance without parliamentary sanction.

The TPA leader urged the COPF to examine the facts and determine whether any transfer, reallocation, or expenditure of election funds had occurred in violation of parliamentary approval and financial regulations.

Opposition MP S. M. Marikkar has questioned whether it is necessary to report to the Presidential Commission appointed to probe substandard coal imports, citing a recent statement made publicly by JVP Secretary General Tilvin Silva.

Marikkar played a video to the media in which Silva claimed the Commission would clear the government of allegations within three months.

The MP pointed out that while the President has appointed the Commission for a six‑month duration, Silva is already suggesting that charges will be dismissed in three months.

“Tilvin Silva has already given the verdict. Despite the President appointing the commission for six months, Silva is speaking as if the commission has already delivered its verdict, claiming they will be free of charges in three months,” he said.

Marikkar further noted that Silva has hinted that former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody will be released from all charges related to the coal imports, questioning whether reporting to the Commission is even required.

He added that with time remaining until May 22 to provide information, Silva’s remarks were undermining the credibility of the Commission. (Newswire)

A high‑level delegation of the Chinese Communist Party met with the General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Tilvin Silva, and a group of JVP leaders at the party headquarters on Wednesday (24).

A delegation from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), led by General Secretary Tilvin Silva, has met senior leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during its ongoing visit to China.

The delegation, which is in China at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party, met the Head of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CCP, Shi Taifeng, in Beijing yesterday.

During the meeting, Shi Taifeng emphasized the long-standing friendship between the JVP and the Chinese Communist Party, underlining the importance of continuously enhancing the political and theoretical knowledge of party cadres. 

Pointing out that China is ready to share its experiences with the JVP whenever needed, he also noted that agreements were reached earlier this year between China and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to provide support aligned with Sri Lanka’s economic development program.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the National People’s Power (NPP) government has been given a mandate to continue its national reform programme free of corruption.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary, Tilvin Silva, has refuted claims by certain opposition politicians claiming that the government has betrayed the country by entering into several agreements with India. 

Tilvin Silva challenged the opposition to prove if any of the agreements have been signed in a manner that could be detrimental to Sri Lanka. 

Stating that the agreements signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit have been openly announced to the public, he said they are beneficial to both nations. 

“Both Sri Lanka and India benefit from these agreements. The NPP Government has proven to be the government to have received the most international support in Sri Lanka’s history. Earlier, they claimed there was no international support or help, but now that we are receiving international help, they are claiming we are betraying the nation,” he said.

Tilvin Silva pointed out that the former Ranil Wickremesinghe-led government, together with the Rajapaksa clan, attempted to sell the local milk producer, MILCO, to an Indian company, but the move was stopped due to the NPP Government having approached India on the matter. 

Acknowledging that the NPP/JVP had lobbied against several projects in the past, Tilvin Silva said they protested the Indo-Lanka Agreement in 1987, which saw the Indian Army entering Sri Lanka, as it was deemed a betrayal of the nation.

“Yes, we did protest against India in the past. However, India has changed now, and so has the world. Just because we protested in 1987, should we still hold on to that anger? No. An issue arose then, for which we protested, and it was later over. At times, they accuse us, claiming that we are not on par with global developments. But as we start working in such a manner, they are accusing us of betraying the nation,” he added.
