A flight bound for Toronto, Canada, was cancelled Thursday evening after a young child refused to secure their seatbelt, Porter Airlines has said.

Flight PD444 from Victoria International Airport in B.C. to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport did not take off as a safety precaution, a spokesperson for Porter Airlines told CBC Toronto in a statement Saturday.

The aircraft left the terminal and headed to the runway for departure but a young child standing in their seat did not secure their seatbelt, despite attempts by the accompanying parent and cabin crew, Brad Cicero said.

The unsafe situation meant the aircraft could not take off, so flight attendants opted to return to the terminal and disembark passengers, he added.

The time required to bridge the aircraft, deplane the child and parent, retrieve their baggage and refile paperwork meant the plane would have departed too late, according to Cicero, who said Victoria’s airport runway closes at 12:30 a.m.

“We apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day,” Cicero said.

A doctor of Sri Lankan origin at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children has been charged with possessing and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material, police say.

Dilan Dissanayake, 44, of Toronto, Canada, was arrested and charged Tuesday, Toronto police said in a news release.

Police said in the release that its internet child exploitation unit launched an investigation after a person allegedly used an electronic device to access and download child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

In February 2026, police carried out search warrants at the hospital and at a private home, seizing several electronic devices, including a work computer.

“At this time, investigators have found no evidence that the child sexual abuse and exploitation material is connected to his practice as a physician,” police said in the release.

Dissanayake was due to appear in a Toronto courtroom on Tuesday. The charges against him have not yet been tested in court.

In a statement posted to its website, the hospital said it is “deeply upset and dismayed” by the news and it condemns the behaviour alleged by police. It said the safety and well-being of its patients, families and staff is its highest priority.

“SickKids has not been notified of any risk to patients and families, and the Toronto Police Service has indicated there is no evidence that the charges are connected to Dr. Dissanayake’s medical practice,” the hospital said in the statement.

Dissanayake was placed on immediate leave once the hospital became aware of the investigation, it said.  

The hospital said families of patients who received care from Dissanayake can contact its patient relations team with any concerns.

Police are searching for multiple suspects after a shooting in Toronto left one man dead and five others injured.

The shooting took place Tuesday evening, a few minutes after 8:30 p.m., in a residential area near Yorkdale Shopping Centre in North York.

A large police presence was in the area later in the evening, and caution tape closed off a nearby intersection, along with an entrance to the Yorkdale subway station.

Duty Insp. Baheer Sarvanandan told reporters that police don’t believe there is any risk to public safety.

He said the man who died was in his 40s, but gave no further details, saying the next of kin still had to be notified.

Sarvanandan confirmed that there were multiple suspects, but said investigators couldn’t yet say if the suspects and victims were known to each other. 

Police also did not yet have suspect descriptions to release, he said, but officers were canvassing the neighbourhood in search of more details.

Police said earlier that the five victims who were sent to hospital — one woman and four men — were expected to survive.

Toronto paramedics said earlier that the conditions of the injured victims ranged from serious to critical.

They said the victims are between 18 and 40 years old.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said she was “disturbed” by news of the shooting.

“My office is in contact with Toronto police, who are on scene now and investigating, and the local councillor Deputy Mayor Mike Colle,” Chow said on social media. (Canadian Press)

Delta Air Lines is offering passengers who were on the Toronto-bound flight that crash-landed and flipped upside down $30,000 apiece.

It was not immediately clear how passengers can claim their money, but if all 76 passengers take Delta up on its offer, it will have to fork over nearly $2.3 million in total.

Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers that the offer “has no strings attached and does not affect rights,” a Delta spokesperson said.

Delta Flight 4819, which was arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport from Minneapolis, burst into flames upon landing and flipped upside down on the runway at around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

The CRJ-900 was carrying 76 passengers and four crew members who were left dangling from their seat belts when the smoking plane came to a stop.

There were no deaths, but 21 people were injured and taken to local hospitals. Airport President and CEO Deborah Flint said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

As of Wednesday morning, all but one of the injured passengers had been released from the hospital, Delta said.

Weather conditions at Toronto Pearson International Airport were clear Monday, Flint said, although wind gusts up to 40 mph were reported at the time of the crash. Two storms dumped nearly 2 feet of snow on the airport in the days leading up to the crash, but no snow was reported on radar at the time of the accident. 

Flint warned against speculation and declined to answer questions about the conditions of the runway.

The cause of the crash remains unclear. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, officials have said. (NBC News)
