The Government has not decided to run a specific tourism promotion campaign targeting LGBTQ+ foreign tourists, the Ministry of Tourism said, addressing the recent public discourse surrounding the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s (SLTPB) communication regarding LGBTQ-themed events. 

Issuing a statement, the Tourism Ministry said that while such proposals, among others, have been presented for consideration, they are part of broader discussions aimed at reinforcing Sri Lanka’s image as a safe and welcoming destination for all travellers. 

The Tourism Ministry went on to note that any future initiatives will be carefully evaluated within the framework of national tourism priorities and social harmony.

“Sri Lanka is a country that respects all genders and communities, along with their individual identities. However, this respect should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement or promotion of any particular sexual behaviours or activities. Our intention is to create space for individuals, should they choose, to engage with globally recognized institutions and platforms where they can express their perspectives freely and safely. As a civilized society, it is essential that we approach such matters with maturity and understanding. No citizen or visitor should be judged or measured based on their gender identity or orientation. Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to uphold dignity, fairness, and mutual respect for all,” the ministry further said. 

Acknowledging that the topic has generated concern among certain segments of society, the Tourism Ministry said the government is mindful of the sensitivities involved and wishes to reassure the public that its tourism promotion remains rooted in unity, tradition, and the shared values that define Sri Lankan society. 

“We believe in celebrating the full spectrum of Sri Lankan identity while ensuring that tourism continues to be a source of pride and prosperity for all citizens. We respectfully call upon all stakeholders, including political and religious leaders, civil society, and the general public, to approach this matter with understanding and calm,” it added.

Sri Lanka is considering providing free visas to over 50 countries, it was reported.

According to Tourism Ministry sources, a proposal in this regard is to be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers next week. 

The Cabinet paper is to be drafted by the Tourism Minister as a joint paper with Foreign Minister Ali Sabry and Public Security Minister Tiran Alles.

The move will allow over 50 countries to enjoy free visas to visit Sri Lanka. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Tourism has launched the ‘Travel Card’, which is a new facility initiated in view of the progress of the tourism industry. 

According to the Ministry, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and the National Development Bank (NDB) on the initiative was held at the premises of the SLTDA today.

Those who have registered themselves as various service providers to the tourism industry under the SLTDA can obtain this card, which will make them eligible for special benefits when dealing with tourists. 

This will enable the provision of qualitative services such as having the number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka up-to-date, exchanging with a bank the foreign currency they bring with them, and enabling tourists to safely obtain goods and services within the country, the ministry revealed.

The Tourism Ministry added that tourists too can obtain a ‘Travel Card’ for their use in Sri Lanka. 

Many dignitaries participated on this special occasion of entering into the said agreement with the National Development Bank including Priyantha Fernando, the chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Senior Deputy President of NDB Sanjaya Perera, Vice President Zeyan Hameed, Assistant Deputy Chairman (Cards) Ashan Wickramanayake and NDB Kollupiiya branch manager Kuraish Shafideen.
