The Sri Lanka Police has unveiled a special security and traffic plan for the opening procession of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera, which begins tomorrow (18) and continues until August 28 under the auspices of the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

The plan includes roadblocks, security duties, vehicle and person checks, guidance for pilgrims, and designated parking arrangements to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the festival.

The first Kumbal Perahera will commence at 6.52 pm tomorrow, starting from the Maligawa and proceeding along Dalada Veediya, Colombo Road, Yatinuwara Road, and Raja Veediya, before returning to the Maligawa. The procession route covers a distance of 1.65 km.

Alternative traffic routes during the Perahera are as follows;

• Heavy vehicles from Katugastota → Mahayiyawa Junction → Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha → Police Junction → Kandy city.
• Light vehicles from Katugastota → D.S. Senanayake Veediya → Cross Road → Yatinuwara Road → turn near Meeramakkam Mosque → Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha.
• Vehicles leaving towards Katugastota → Police Junction → Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha → Mahayawa.
• Vehicles from Tennekumbura and Ampitiya → Sangharaja Mawatha → Wells Park Junction → turn at Ahelepola Kumarihami Mawatha → Bogambara → near Railway Station → Colombo (left) or city (right). Entry is also possible via Rajapihilla Mawatha Junction → Palliya Para.

The Sri Lanka Police has unveiled a security and traffic plan for the historic Kandy Esala Perahera 2026, which will parade the streets under state patronage from August 18 to 28.

The festival will begin with the Kumbal Perahera from August 18–22, followed by the Randoli Perahera from August 23–27, concluding with the Day Perahera on August 28.

Police said a special operation will be in place throughout the period, including roadblocks, security checks, vehicle inspections, guidance to pilgrims, and designated parking facilities.

A total of 6,200 police officers, 564 Special Task Force personnel, 1,200 tri‑forces officers, and 29 Civil Security officers will be deployed, supported by police dog units. 

Roadblocks will cover 14 entry points into Kandy, while 13 parking areas (six for light vehicles and seven for heavy vehicles) have been allocated for public convenience.

Drivers have been advised to use alternative routes during the Perahera period, including:

• From Katugastota to Peradeniya via Gohagoda Road for vehicles heading to Colombo and Nuwara Eliya.
• From Colombo via Kandy towards Kurunegala, Matale, and Mahiyanganaya via Peradeniya and Madawala.
• From Kandy towards Mahiyanganaya and Badulla via Dharmashoka Mawatha and Thannekumbura.

Sri Lanka Police have announced special traffic and security arrangements across the Colombo Central Division from June 26 to July 2 for the Poson Festival. 

The measures coincide with the State Poson Festival centered on the historic sacred sites of Anuradhapura’s Atamasthana, Mihintale Temple grounds, and Tantirimale Raja Maha Viharaya. 

Within Kompannaveediya, Fort, Maradana, Maligawatte, and Aduruppuveediya police areas, a Poson zone will feature three Bhakthi Gee recitals, 70 lantern displays, and four dansals, with officers deployed for security and traffic management. 

For the first time, the Scout Association will organize a Scout Poson Zone along the road from Lake House Roundabout to Police Headquarters on June 28 and 29.

A special traffic plan will be implemented in Colombo this afternoon (19) in view of the National War Heroes Commemoration Day ceremony, which is scheduled to be held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the War Heroes Memorial near the Parliament Grounds.

The Sri Lanka Police has announced that from 3.30 pm onwards, traffic leaving Colombo will be restricted at Polduwa Junction, while entry into Colombo will be restricted at Kiyannam Junction. 

Vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes through Battaramulla, Palantuna, and Rajamalwatta depending on their direction of travel.

Alternative routes:

• Vehicles leaving Colombo via Parliament Road can travel through Polduwa Junction, Battaramulla, Palantuna, and Kiyannam Junction.
• Vehicles entering Colombo via Kiyannam Junction can travel through Palam Thuna and Battaramulla.
• Vehicles coming from Rajamalwatta via Bodhiraja Mawatha can reach Battaramulla Road and proceed along the required routes.

The Sri Lanka Police have announced that a special traffic plan will be enforced in and around Colombo during the official visit of the President of Vietnam, To Lam.

President To Lam, who is currently on a state visit to India, is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka today (07) for a two‑day visit. He will depart the island on May 8.

The Police said the traffic plan will be in effect throughout the duration of the visit to ensure security and smooth vehicular movement in key areas of the capital.

The arrangements are expected to cover major routes around Colombo, particularly those linked to the President’s engagements during his stay.

According to the Police, following arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, on Thursday (07) the VIP motorcade is expected to proceed via: Katunayake–Colombo Expressway → Grandpass/Orugodawatte Junction → Baseline Road → Borella Junction → D.S. Senanayake Junction → Horton Place → Nelum Pokuna Roundabout → Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha → Library Junction → Mal Road Junction → Liberty Roundabout → St. Michael’s Roundabout → St. Michael’s Road → Galle Road → St. Michael’s Road Junction → Galle Road → Galle Face Roundabout → Galle Face Centre Road → Baladaksha Mawatha → NSA Roundabout → Lotus Road → Ceramic Junction → York Street.

Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from entering the above route two hours before the movement of the VIP. All other vehicles will be restricted once the VIP convoy commences travel.

The Vietnamese President is scheduled to proceed to the Presidential Secretariat on Friday (08).

Entry of heavy vehicles, including buses, via NSA Roundabout, Galle Face Centre Road, and Bank Mawatha will be suspended two hours before the Movement. All vehicular access will be restricted once the convoy begins its journey.

Sri Lanka Police have announced heightened security and a special traffic management plan ahead of the exposition of Sacred Relics brought from India, scheduled to take place at the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo from February 5 to 11, 2026.

The Sacred Relics are set to arrive in the country on February 4, with the public exposition beginning at 6:00 a.m. on February 5 and continuing around the clock until 7:00 a.m. on February 11.

Police have issued a set of guidelines to ensure a safe and orderly environment for devotees, urging full cooperation with security arrangements.

With large crowds, including foreign visitors, expected at the temple, the public is advised to remain vigilant against theft and to avoid bringing unnecessary personal items such as helmets, large bags, or jackets. The use of mobile phones inside the Sacred Chamber is strictly prohibited.

The Sri Lanka Police has announced traffic restrictions in view of the 151st Annual Procession of the St. Sebastian’s Church in Moratuwa, which is scheduled to take place today (20 Jan) and commence this evening.

The Police state that the procession will begin at St. Sebastian’s Church, Moratuwa, and proceed along Old Galle Road, St. Peter’s Lane, New Galle Road, Moratuwa Bus Stand, Weera Puranappu Raja Mawatha, and Joseph Road up to the Cross Junction, before returning to the church via Old Galle Road.

Accordingly, motorists and the public travelling through the area are requested to use the following alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion expected from 4.00 pm today until 1.00 am tomorrow.

Sri Lanka Police has announced that a special traffic plan will be implemented on Friday, Nov. 21, due to a public rally at the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre in the Mirihana Police Division.

The Sri Lanka Police has announced special traffic arrangements in view of the Global Bohra Conference and Spiritual Convention scheduled to take place in Colombo from 27 June to 05 July 2025. 

The Police said special traffic plans will be implemented from 07.00 am to 10.00 pm in view of the event, which is expected to draw approximately 15,000 participants from several countries. 

The event, which coincides with the Bohra Community’s annual Spiritual Assembly, will be conducted at the Bambalapitiya Bohra Mosque and the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC), presided over by the global Bohra Community’s spiritual leader.

The Police said thereby, from 27 June to 05 July, special traffic arrangements will be implemented near the Bambalapitiya Bohra Mosque, restricting traffic along the Marine Drive from 07.00 am to 11.30 am and from 03.00 pm to 10.00 pm for certain vehicles.

Sri Lanka Police has announced that a special traffic plan will be implemented in the vicinity of the Galle Face Green in Colombo in view of celebrations to dawn the New Year.

The Police said a large crowd is expected to visit the Galle Face Green during New Year’s Eve, tomorrow (Dec 31), to celebrate the dawn of 2025.

As a result, heavy traffic is expected in several parts of Colombo, including Pita Kotte, Fort, Slave Island, Maradana, Colpetty, Bambalapitiya, and Cinnamon Gardens.

Special security and traffic plans are underway today in view of the acceptance of nominations at the National Election Commission for the 2024 Presidential Election. 

The Police state special traffic and security plans are underway from 08.00 am to 02.00 pm in the vicinity of the Election Commission.

The traffic plan will cover the Polduwa, Borella, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Rajagiriya, Thalawathugoda, and Welikada areas. 

Nearly 1000 Police and Police STF personnel have been deployed for security and traffic duties during this period.

The Sri Lanka Police has announced that a special traffic plan will be implemented on Thursday in view of the acceptance of nominations at the National Election Commission for the upcoming presidential elections. 

The Police state special traffic and security plans will be underway from 08.00 am to 02.00 pm on Thursday (Aug 15).

Acting Police Spokesman DIG Ruwan Gunasekera said the traffic plan will cover the Polduwa, Borella, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Rajagiriya, Thalawathugoda, and Welikada areas. 

He further said that nearly 1000 Police and Police STF personnel will be deployed for security and traffic duties during this period.
