Sri Lanka Railways has launched a new programme to carry out major repairs on three S11-type trains in collaboration with the Government Factory Department, at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 million per train.

The initiative, introduced this year, aims to strengthen railway services through cooperation between government institutions while reducing the maintenance workload at the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena inspected the ongoing repair work at the Maligawatta Railway Yard on October 23.

During the visit, the Deputy Minister observed the complete overhaul of an Indian-manufactured S11 train.

As part of the refurbishment, the train’s existing fibre front panel will be replaced with a newly designed stainless steel panel.

The repairs are expected to be completed shortly, with the train scheduled to return to service in January 2027.

According to the authorities, the new programme is being carried out with the assistance of the Heavy Welding Division of the Government Factory Department, allowing the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop to carry out its regular maintenance operations more efficiently.

The Maligawatta Railway Yard, which covers more than 15 acres, provides maintenance services for trains operating on several railway lines, including the Up-country, Coastal and Kelani Valley lines.

The facility handles routine maintenance, running repairs and major overhauls of trains operating across the country. (Newswire)
