The Ministry of Education has announced that annual and compulsory teacher transfer applications for national schools for the year 2026 are now open online via http://nstt.moe.gov.lk.

Teachers have the opportunity to submit applications through the online system between 16-30 July, 2026.

A printed copy of the completed application must then be handed over to the principal of the school where the teacher receives his or her salary, on or before July 31, 2026.

The Ministry has emphasized that applications submitted personally or sent by post will not be accepted by the Ministry of Education. (Newswire)

Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, PM Harini Amarasuriya, says a better mechanism will be formulated for placements and transfers in the Teacher Educators Service and the Education Administrative Service.

The Prime Minister made these remarks at the meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, chaired by her, which was held in Parliament last week (06 Aug).

On this occasion, the Members of Parliament who were present at the Committee pointed out that there are issues regarding placements and transfers in the Teacher Educators Service and the Education Administrative Service. 

It was especially noted that, out of the 6 officers who were recently appointed for the North Central Province, 5 have again been transferred. Accordingly, prolonged attention of the Committee was drawn to this matter, and it was discussed that, when granting such appointments, the human factors concerning the officers should also be taken into account. It was also pointed out by PM Amarasuriya that attention should be paid to the service requirement when placing officers.

Furthermore, PM Amarasuriya said that, so far, there has been no formal plan or mechanism implemented regarding placements and transfers in the Teacher Educators Service and the Education Administrative Service, and that plans are currently being prepared in this regard. She further stated that a better mechanism, taking into account human factors as well, will be formulated for placements and transfers.

In addition, the Prime Minister instructed the officials to take the necessary steps as soon as possible regarding the admission of students with disabilities to universities.

A protest has been held against the transfer of the Commissioner of the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council, M.M.C.K.K. Manapperuma. 

It is reported that the transfer has been made based on a petition filed by four individuals, including National Peoples’ Power (NPP) MP Samanmali Gunasinghe.

Staging a protest in front of the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council today against the transfer, the Municipal Council staff claimed that the move was political vengeance. 

Former Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Councilor Kris Balthazar said the transfer has been made per a petition handed over to the Western Province Governor.

“A baseless petition signed by four former JVP members of council at the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal council to the governor of the Western province, including the current Dehiwala development committee chairperson who’s a representative of the NPP in parliament who signed the petition, the municipal commissioner was transferred overnight. The Judicial Service Commission has ordered the transfer of Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage to the post of Moratuwa District Judge, effective tomorrow (Jan 1, 2025), Mawbima newspaper reported. 

As Fort Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali was appointed as the new Colombo Chief Magistrate, the Judicial Service Commission took steps to appoint the Mount Lavinia Magistrate to fill the vacancy created at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

The transfer follows a written request submitted by Thilina Gamage to the Judicial Service Commission, seeking the appointment of another magistrate to handle a case involving a bribe of Rs. 8 million. 

The case pertains to a former Western Provincial Council member, Salochana Gamage, who is currently in remand custody. Thilina Gamage cited a conflict of interest, as Salochana Gamage is his sibling. (Newswire)

The Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Ajith Rohana against his arbitrary and unreasonable transfer has been fixed for September 04 by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. 

SDIG Ajith Rohana had filed the petition seeking an order announcing as void the arbitrary and unreasonable transfer issued to him.

Stating that the court was set to deliberate another case, the Supreme Court judge bench postponed SDIG Ajith Rohana’s case to September. 

In April, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana objected to his transfer approved by the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles. 

The objection was raised in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the National Police Commission Chandra Fernando.

In his letter, the SDIG pointed out that the transfer approved by the Public Security Minister was malicious, arbitrary, and unreasonable. 

SDIG Ajith Rohana also revealed that he had been reprimanded by the Public Security Minister over social media reports connecting him to the IGP post and was warned of a transfer over the matter.
