A tense situation was reported near the JVP headquarters in Pelawatte after the Police prevented a group of unemployed graduates from entering the premises.

A group of unemployed graduates had staged a procession to the JVP Headquarters seeking a discussion with government officials. 

However, they were prevented from entering the premises, with the location being deployed with heavy Police security.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today spoke to a group of unemployed graduates who were engaged in a protest for the second day near the Parliament, to inquire about their needs. 

The unemployed graduates are engaged in a protest at the Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla demanding jobs from the government.

Speaking to the Opposition Leader, the unemployed graduates said during the past election, the government had promised to grant jobs but was yet to fulfil the promise. 

They further said that around 40,000 unemployed graduates, including themselves, have been stranded. 

Responding to them, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that although he had informed Parliament on this matter on several occasions before, no response had been received from the government or the responsible parties.

MP Premadasa further revealed that the government has informed that it will provide an answer to the issue regarding the unemployed graduates in Parliament today. (Newswire)

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued an order restricting protests around Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla from today until Friday (21 Mar).

According to the Police, the order was issued after the court was informed of protests and token strikes organized in the area during this period.

Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa has vowed that issues of unemployed graduates will be resolved under a Samagi Jana Balawegaya government.

MP Premadasa said that over 50,000 graduates are currently unemployed and that the current government has failed to provide a solution.

He further said that every graduate will be provided a job and will also be granted various opportunities to become entrepreneurs.

Stating that he intends to provide basic and working capital, he added that he aimed to also provide government, as well as, private sector jobs.

Minister of Labour Manusha Nanayakkara says the state services require a workforce of 1 million to operate at present.

Speaking in Parliament today, he further said that, however, under the former governments, the state sector workforce increased to 1.7 million, while government appointments were given to graduates thrice in the recent past.

Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on the government appointments of unemployed graduates, Minister Nanayakara questioned what MP Premadasa proposes to do under his government policy.

Minister Manusha Nanayakkara questioned if the Opposition Leader would disregard the burden and needs of the state and provide appointments to all unemployed graduates. 

In response to the question, MP Premadasa said the issue of unemployed graduates cannot be resolved only by the state sector, but can only be resolved together through state, private, semi-government, and foreign employment sectors.

MP Premadasa said this was the solution that would be provided under a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) regime.

He further alleged that Provincial Governors were providing state appointments to their close associates, but the government was unable to resolve the issues of unemployed graduates.

The Opposition Leader reiterated that the issue of unemployed graduates needs to be resolved together with the private, semi-government, and foreign employment sectors. (Newswire)
