Lecturers from state universities islandwide have planned a symbolic strike today (30), over several key demands.

The strike has been planned, highlighting key demands, including salary inequality and a shortage of academic staff.

The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) Secretary, Senior Lecturer Charudaththe Ilangasinghe, said that even though it has been a year since the government came into power, there has still been no resolution to the ongoing crises affecting state universities.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, he warned that these issues pose a serious risk to the continuity of academic activities, including examinations. (Newswire)

The University Lecturers’ Association has made new suggestions concerning the government’s proposed education reforms during a meeting with Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, PM Harini Amarasuriya. 

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, a discussion aimed at informing the University Lecturers’ Association and all university representatives about the new education reforms was held at the Education Ministry, under the leadership of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, yesterday.

During the event, the Prime Minister briefed the university lecturers on the planned educational reforms.

The University Lecturers’ Association expressed its views on various aspects of the reforms, including curriculum revisions, integration of digital technology, and the introduction of modules and activities as part of the broader educational transformation.

PM Amarasuriya paid attention to the new proposals and opinions presented during the meeting and acknowledged the feedback shared regarding the new educational reforms.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwewa, along with other state officials and representatives from the University Lecturers’ Association, participated in the discussion. (Newswire)
