Parliament is set to take up for approval the Motor Vehicles (Inspection) Order No. 03 of 2026, introduced to strengthen road safety following a series of serious accidents linked to structural weaknesses in passenger vehicles.

According to the government, recent investigations by motor vehicle inspectors revealed that mechanical and structural defects in vehicles had contributed to many of the accidents. 

In response, authorities identified the need to establish a formal procedure for checking the roadworthiness of passenger transport services, school transport, office transport, and rental vehicles used for special tours. 

These services fall under the regulation of the National Transport Commission, Provincial Passenger Transport Authorities, and the Sri Lanka Transport Board.

The Order, published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2489/22 dated 19 May 2026, introduces the necessary provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act. 

The proposal to present the Order before Parliament was submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and has already been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka Police says a reduction in accidents has been noted following the special vehicle inspection operation launched recently.

Addressing the media today, Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga said the special operation has been highly successful since its launch on 22 December 2024.

He said fatal road accidents have reduced by 04 to 05 incidents per day, while serious accidents or those resulting in serious injuries have also dropped by 08 -10 incidents. 

SSP Buddhika Manatunga further requested all drivers and owners of vehicles used for public transportation and other vehicles to remove all illegal parts from their vehicles. 

He added that even if various parties attempt to block this vehicle operation, the Sri Lanka Police will continue conducting it. (Newswire)

Sri Lanka Police has announced a special vehicle operation, effective from 02 January 2025, in line with the government’s ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ national programme.

Per the directives issued by the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), the special vehicle operation will continue until further notice covering all Police Divisions.

The special operation will include the inspection of vehicles for illegal modifications, loud silencers, and other equipment that could cause inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. 

Police officials have been instructed to conduct three-hour inspections twice a day at suitable locations and without inconveniencing passengers of public transportation. (Newswire)
