Five suspects have been arrested for allegedly obstructing police officers and assaulting them while they were on traffic duty during the Mihindu Perahera in the Veyangoda Police Division.

The incident occurred yesterday (29) when a group travelling in a cab allegedly interfered with the officers’ duties and used criminal force against them.

The suspects, aged 20 and 21, are residents of Nittambuwa and Yakkala. The Veyangoda Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

Minister of Transport and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake has inspected the proposed site of the new multi-purpose logistics and warehousing centre in Veyangoda, Gampaha. 

The government has proposed establishing the logistics and warehousing centre with the aim of minimizing delays and damages during goods transportation. 

This initiative is part of the President’s budget proposals and the Ministry of Transport and Urban Development’s sustainable planning strategy to improve the efficiency of freight services.

As part of this national program to modernize and strengthen Sri Lanka’s transport sector and revitalize import-export operations, Minister Bimal Rathnayake visited the proposed site yesterday (28).

The three-day excavation effort in the Wanduramba area in Veyangoda, initiated in search of rumoured buried treasure, concluded at 04.00 PM yesterday as per a court order issued by the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court. 

Despite high expectations and the significant involvement of various government agencies, the operation did not uncover any treasure or items of archaeological value.  

The excavation which began on 21 November, was overseen by the Department of Archaeology, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, the Veyangoda Police, the Road Development Authority, and the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat. The search was launched after the Police Special Task Force (STF) reportedly found evidence suggesting the presence of buried items at the site, a location that has been a hotspot for treasure hunters over the years.  

During the operation, workers encountered a massive rock that required drilling after attempts to lift it using a crane were unsuccessful. This development prolonged the search, fueling speculation about what lay beneath. However, after exhaustive efforts, officials confirmed that no significant findings were made.  

The site, situated near the Central Expressway construction project, has a history of being targeted by treasure hunters, with multiple previous excavations and arrests of individuals caught with treasure-hunting equipment. Earlier inspections by the Department of Archaeology had similarly concluded that the site held no hidden treasure.  

Despite the absence of discoveries, the operation highlighted the importance of preserving archaeological sites and ensuring that investigations are conducted under legal and professional oversight.  

Officials have now closed the site, and any further excavation will require new evidence and approval from the relevant authorities. (Newswire)

Excavation work commenced yesterday (21) in search of treasure in a land near the Central Expressway under construction in the Wanduramba area in Veyangoda.

The measures were taken on a court order issued by the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court.

According to the Veyangoda Police, the said location has been excavated on multiple occasions over the years, by treasure hunters, claiming that there was treasure at the site. The security forces had also arrested several people with equipment used to excavate treasure on several occasions.

During inspections carried out by the Department of Archaeology, it was revealed that there is no treasure at the site. However, investigations conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) have found that there was something buried in the ground.

Accordingly, after reporting the facts to the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court, excavation work has commenced under the supervision of the officials of the Department of Archeology, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Veyangoda Police, Road Development Authority, and the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat. Two teenagers were reported dead after being hit by a train near the Wadurawa Railway Station early last morning (May 25).

The Veyangoda Police stated that the two boys who were on their way for a leisure trip had been walking on the railway tracks while being on their mobile phones at the time of the accident.

The victims have been identified as residents of Waduruwa, aged 18 and 19 years.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the two victims’ houses are located close to the Railway track and they had walked towards the Wadurawa Railway station along the railway tracks.
