The US Embassy in Sri Lanka has donated equipment to strengthen the Ministry of Justice’s virtual court procedures. 

The equipment, consisting of 35 video conferencing units, was officially handed over to Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe by US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung. 

Taking to ‘X’, Ambassador Chung said together with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the US Embassy has taken a significant step forward for the Justice Ministry’s virtual courts in Sri Lanka. 

“Today’s donation of 35 video conferencing units and opening of new facilities in Agunakolapalessa and Galle will help ensure virtual proceedings improve prisoners’ access to legal services, speed up trials, and reduce the judicial backlog,” she further said. 

Ambassador Chung also added that the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) is committed to supporting Sri Lanka’s initiatives that aim to reduce prison overcrowding, streamline court automation, and enhance the overall effectiveness of judicial processes. (Newswire)
