The Ministry of Education has taken steps to extend the validity period of footwear gift vouchers for school students.

Accordingly, although the validity period of those gift vouchers was scheduled to end on Sunday (15 Feb), the Ministry announced that it has been extended until 28 February.

Cabinet approval has been granted to provide a pair of shoes for selected school students, Piriven students, and Sila Matha for the 2026 academic year, through a QR-coded voucher system.

According to the government, it has been decided to provide vouchers for a pair of shoes for the selected school students by the end of the 2025 school term. 

The vouchers have been prepared by the Ministry of Education and are planned to be securely printed with a QR code that is to be given to the beneficiary students. 

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Prime Minister, in her capacity as the Minister of Education, to select the following students for the said programme. 

• 644,000 students who are in schools with fewer than 250 students across the island. 
• 53,093 students who are in estate schools that have 251-500 students. 
• 2,300 students in 30 schools for special needs. 
• 30,000 selected Piriven/Sila Matha students. 

Responding to concerns that the amount allocated per student is not sufficient in relation to market prices, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told the media that the allocations were made following discussions with industry stakeholders, including importers and manufacturers. The Ministry of Education has extended the validity period of gift vouchers for providing school footwear for the year 2025.

According to a Ministry statement, the validity period of the said voucher was to conclude today (28 Feb).

However, the Education Ministry has decided to extend the validity period of the gift vouchers for providing school footwear until 20 March 2025. (Newswire)

The Ministry of Education launched its inaugural programme to grant vouchers for the purchase of sanitary napkins at the President’s Girls College in Nawala today. 

According to Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, an investment of Rs. 1 billion has been allocated for this programme, with the view of encouraging school attendance. 

Accordingly, a voucher of Rs. 1,200 will be given per schoolgirl under the sanitary napkin programme.

The Ministry of Education has already organized the necessary activities to provide the vouchers through schools.

Under the programme, the Ministry of Education has taken steps to provide vouchers to buy sanitary napkins for 06 months starting from June 2024.

Sanitary napkins will be provided via vouchers for the 07 national schools belonging to the estate school category and all the provincial schools from the entire student population of Sri Lanka. (Newswire)

The distribution of vouchers for school shoes will be carried out in December this year, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha announced today.

Addressing the Parliament, Minister Premajayantha said the vouchers will be distributed from 04-27 December 2023.

He further said that the vouchers are to be distributed to a total of 740,000 students of state schools.
