Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, addressing an event marking the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations via video on Monday, urged nations to strengthen understanding and mutual trust through dialogue, stressing the need for unity and consensus in the face of global challenges.

He outlined a four‑pronged approach proposed by China to advance inter‑civilization dialogue, emphasizing mutual respect and inclusiveness, people‑oriented exchanges to foster friendship, inheritance and innovation of traditional cultures empowered by technology, and improved mechanisms for dialogue through platforms such as the UN Alliance of Civilizations and UNESCO.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called on all sides to promote unity and seek consensus through exchanges, and continuously consolidate the popular and cultural foundation for building a community with a shared future for humanity in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Wang highlighted that China proposes a four-pronged approach to promoting dialogue among civilizations.

He said, firstly, that all sides should adhere to mutual respect and promote harmonious coexistence among different civilizations, calling for championing equality, mutual learning, dialogue and inclusiveness among civilizations.

Secondly, all sides should abide by a people-oriented approach and lay a solid foundation for exchanges among civilizations, Wang said, adding that efforts should be made to promote mutual understanding and friendship among people of all countries and ensure that the fruits of mutual learning among civilizations benefit the people more extensively and directly.

China is willing to enhance dialogue among civilizations with all countries and deepen exchanges of experience in state governance, in order to jointly solve the problems of the times and work together to broaden the path of world modernization, Wang added.

Thirdly, Wang called for endeavors in inheritance and innovation of traditional culture to enhance the driving force of civilization and progress, noting that China will assist all countries in achieving creative transformation and innovative development of their outstanding traditional cultures.

He also appealed for fully exploiting technological dividends such as artificial intelligence and social media, to empower exchanges, mutual learning, inheritance and innovation among civilizations, and promote the common prosperity of human civilization.

Fourthly, Wang said all sides should adhere to exchanges and mutual learning and improve the mechanism for dialogue among civilizations.

China supports further leveraging platforms including the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Forum of Ancient Civilizations to enable them to play an important role in inter-civilization dialogue, he added. Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake this morning, during a transit stop en route to China following an official visit to South Africa.

Commenting on the meeting, Minister Herath said that while welcoming Minister Wang Yi, he extended his sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of China for their timely and generous support to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. 

“I was pleased to meet H.E. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, during his brief visit to Sri Lanka this morning (12/01/26). Our discussions focused, among others, on further advancing cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, development cooperation and tourism. The discussions also focused on rebuilding Sri Lanka post Cyclone Ditwah,” he said, in a post on ‘X’.

Minister Herath further said that in this regard, he particularly requested the assistance of the Chinese government in infrastructure development, including reconstruction of identified roads, railways and bridges which were affected.

“Minister Wang Yi assured his personal intervention to the said request and expressed confidence that Sri Lanka is on the right track for early recovery, and reaffirmed the Chinese Government’s fullest support,” he added.

The government of China has assured support for Sri Lanka to effectively address the challenges of financial debt.

The assurance was given by the director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, (and Foreign Minister) Wang Yi, on Wednesday (Aug. 16).

Foreign Minister Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the vow during a meeting with visiting Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, at the sidelines of the seventh China-South Asian Expo in Kunming, southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Foreign Minister Wang said China is always Sri Lanka’s reliable strategic partner and appreciates that Sri Lanka has always been friendly to China and has stood by China on issues related to its core interests.

China also firmly supports Sri Lanka in safeguarding its sovereign independence and national dignity, and is willing to strengthen exchanges of experience in governance as well as cooperation in various fields with Sri Lanka, he said.

Wang vowed that China will help Sri Lanka improve its capacity for independent development, get rid of the “poverty trap” and the “trap of non-development,” and accelerate its industrialization process and agricultural modernization.

He further expressed belief that Sri Lanka will overcome its temporary difficulties, find a development path in line with its national conditions, and realize revitalization and prosperity.

Noting that Sri Lanka is an important participant and beneficiary of the China-South Asia Expo, Foreign Minister Wang welcomed the Sri Lankan side to continue to make good use of this important platform to further explore the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena thanked China for its firm support for Sri Lanka in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for its timely and effective assistance to Sri Lanka in times of difficulty.

The forward-looking flagship cooperation projects between the two sides such as the Colombo Port City and the Hambantota Port will bring benefits to the Sri Lankan people and play a key role in regional connectivity and sustainable development, he said.

The Prime Minister added that Sri Lanka will work with China to expand cooperation in economy, trade and investment, agriculture, tourism, energy, as well as innovation to help Sri Lanka achieve food self-sufficiency and accelerate the development of key industries. (NewsWire)
