The foundation stone for a multi‑purpose development project to transform the Wariyapola market grounds into a modern, income‑generating hub was laid yesterday (14).

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock and Kurunegala District Coordinating Committee Chairman Namal Karunaratne.

Implemented under the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government’s Performance‑Based Capital Grants scheme, together with allocations from the Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha, the project carries a total estimated cost of Rs. 39.27 million.

Plans include the construction of a modern shopping complex with new trade stalls for entrepreneurs and permanent vendors, alongside a proper waste management system, clean drinking water facilities, and upgraded sanitation. The initiative aims to provide a safer, more organized environment for business activities and greater convenience for the public.

Scheduled for completion within seven months, the project is expected to further strengthen Wariyapola town’s role as a key economic center in the North Western Province. (Newswire)

Construction work on a new Material Recovery Facility in the Wariyapola area commenced yesterday (09), under the “Clean Sri Lanka” National Programme as part of the government’s measures to formalize waste management across the country.

According to the President’s Office, the new facility, which will be established on land belonging to the Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha, is estimated to cost Rs. 33 million.

Its primary objective is to systematically collect, sort and direct non-degradable waste such as plastic, polythene and other solid materials for recycling.

Implemented under the joint financial framework of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, the project aims to provide sustainable solutions to the country’s waste management challenges.

It is expected to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, promote recycling, contribute to the establishment of a circular economy and minimise environmental pollution.

In addition, the facility is anticipated to create new “green job” opportunities for local residents. Under this islandwide initiative, 58 Material Recovery Facilities are scheduled to be constructed.

Of these, four are planned for completion this year. The first centre was launched recently in Kattankudy, in the Batticaloa District, while two more are set to be established in Thalawa and Tangalle. (Newswire)

A mistake at the hands of the training pilots had resulted in the recent crash of a Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft, Minister of Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake said.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Rathnayake said he had requested and received a copy of the investigation report by the specially appointed technical committee probing the crash.

He further clarified that per the report, the aircraft and engines were well-maintained and not old.

“Just because old vehicles are allowed to run on the roads, we cannot do so with aircraft. The pilots flying this specific aircraft were under training. A mistake had been made by them. We are relieved that the trainers survived the accident. This is an ordinary incident during training and happens the world over,” he said.

Minister Bimal Rathnayake stressed this was the only reason for the Air Force aircraft crash last week and this was the finding of the technical report on the crash as well.

A Sri Lanka Air Force training aircraft crashed in Wariyapola on Friday, 21 March.

A K-8 training jet with two pilots had suddenly gone out of radar contact and later crashed at Minuwangete in Wariyapola.

However, both pilots had managed to safely eject, landing at a school in Padeniya, Kurunegala. (Newswire)
