People’s Struggle Movement activist Wasantha Mudalige has alleged that information generated using ChatGPT was copied into documents prepared for a Sri Lanka Police tender to procure 500 body cameras, while raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the procurement process.

Speaking to the media, Mudalige claimed that the Terms of Reference (TOR), which outlines the equipment required, its specifications and the purpose of the procurement, had been prepared using information generated through ChatGPT.

He alleged that those involved in the project had sought recommendations from ChatGPT regarding the body cameras and related requirements before copying the AI-generated information into the TOR.

Mudalige further claimed that the information generated by ChatGPT had been copied into the document without being adequately reviewed or corrected before it was issued.

He said the Police procurement unit had called for tenders in March this year to purchase 500 body cameras and 70 docking stations for Police and security personnel.

Explaining the purpose of the equipment, Mudalige said body cameras are worn on the clothing of Police officers while carrying out duties, including raids and other operations, allowing video footage to subsequently be used as evidence. He noted that the use of such cameras is already practised in other countries.

Mudalige welcomed the move to introduce body cameras, describing it as a positive initiative, particularly amid concerns over deaths in Police custody and alleged assaults at Police stations. He also said Sri Lanka had reached a point where installing CCTV cameras inside Police stations had become essential.

However, Mudalige alleged that the issue was not the decision to introduce body cameras, but the manner in which the tender process had been conducted.

He claimed the procurement process had been structured in a biased manner to favour an individual supportive of the Government and further alleged that technical issues could prevent the proposed body cameras from being properly utilised.

Claiming that there were serious irregularities in the tender process, Mudalige called for the current procurement process to be cancelled and restarted. (Newswire)
