Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena announced today that the official website of the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center has been launched, providing passengers with bus and train timetables and other key information on multimodal centers across the country.

A highlight of the new platform is “MAKU,” an AI‑based Passenger Assistant, which allows users to easily access the information they need. 

The Deputy Minister said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to modernize transport infrastructure and improve passenger convenience.

The launch also showcased a new system for bus terminal and fleet management, with discussions on how GPS technology will soon be integrated to enable real‑time bus monitoring.

Officials reviewed the existing Park and Ride system, presenting data on vehicle usage and reductions in environmental damage through emission control. Proposals were made to expand the system with innovations such as mechanical car parks.

A passenger transport data system has also been established, capturing details such as bus numbers, passenger volumes, peak and off‑peak times, and delays in arrivals. Gunasena emphasized that such data will be critical for future decision‑making in the sector.

Multimodal transport centers, which integrate railways, long‑distance buses, and metro bus services under one hub, are seen as central to reducing private vehicle use and encouraging public transport.

Minister of Public Administration Chandana Abeyratne says a complaint has been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the cyber‑attack on the Ministry of Public Administration website. 

According to media reports, he said the complaint was made through the intervention of the Ministry Secretary.

It was reported that the cyber attackers attempted to auction data on the website in order to obtain money.

However, Minister Abeyratne clarified that no highly sensitive data was compromised, and only some public information had fallen into the hands of another party.

The minister confirmed that the CID is now investigating the matter.

He further revealed that the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) has also commenced a separate inquiry into the incident. (Newswire)

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has called on Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to resign from her post as Education Minister, over controversy surrounding references to adult web content in educational material.

Addressing the issue, Weerawansa said such references could encourage curiosity among schoolchildren and lead them to experiment with inappropriate material, posing a serious threat to the country’s future generation.

He alleged that the move amounted to an attempt to undermine the nation’s human capital and questioned whether it could have occurred without awareness at the highest levels.

Weerawansa demanded that the Prime Minister step down immediately, adding that if she fails to do so, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake should remove her from the post.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that measures are being taken to address issues related to the government’s outdated and non-functional official websites.

According to Ada Derana, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thushara Rodrigo said the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and many Sri Lankan diplomatic missions are currently running on outdated technology due to longstanding technical limitations.

Thushara Rodrigo revealed that a common website platform will be created for all Sri Lankan diplomatic missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as some websites may no longer be available if updates are carried out under the current circumstances. 

Providing details on measures taken to resolve the issue, Thushara Rodrigo said that the project for the development of a unified platform is progressing under the guidance of the Ministry of Digital Economy, ICTA, and SLCERT, and that the contract for the project was awarded to a developer on 17 October 2025.

He further said that an interagency meeting was held on October 31 to connect all Sri Lankan diplomatic missions, identify their individual challenges, and coordinate the project, adding that work in this regard is expected to be completed by mid-January 2026. 

Stating that this move to develop the Ministry and mission websites is being implemented under the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thushara Rodrigo, pointed out that this is the first initiative of its kind under the government’s digitalization programme.

His clarification comes after Opposition MP Harsha de Silva raised concerns over the government’s outdated and non-functional official websites, especially those linked to foreign missions, economic diplomacy and overseas investment facilitation.

The presence of such language has raised suspicions that the website may have been hacked or tampered with by external parties.

The Sri Lanka Law College has launched its new website https://www.sllc.ac.lk/home developed with the support of the European Union-funded ‘Support to Justice Reform (JURE)’ project, to enhance legal education. 

This project is jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNICEF in Sri Lanka and facilitated by the Ministry of Justice. 

This initiative is part of the broader digitalisation action plan led by the Ministry of Justice within its reform mechanisms. In addition to supporting the website, the EU-funded JURE project will continue to support Law College in realising catalytical reforms in the justice education sector in Sri Lanka.

The new website was launched on Monday at the Law College Auditorium, with the participation of Chief Justice, Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC; Secretary, Ministry of Justice Nihal Ranasinghe, Principal of Sri Lanka Law College, Dr Athula Pathinayake; Deputy Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka, Edoardo Spacca; and Officer-In-Charge, UNDP in Sri Lanka, Malin Herwig.

It was launched last week (July 26) in Colombo with the participation of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Justice Nihal Ranasinghe, Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and Maldives  Johann Hesse, Resident Representative, UNDP in Sri Lanka, Azusa Kubota, and Deputy Resident Representative, UNICEF in Sri Lanka Begona Arellano.

The official website of the Interim Secretariat for Truth and Reconciliation Mechanism (ISTRM) was launched at the Presidential Secretariat recently (July 18).

The ISTRM was established to address the post-conflict grievances of Sri Lankan citizens, aiming to facilitate reconciliation, reparation, and sustainable peace in the country.

The Commission is mandated to review, consider, and facilitate the implementation of recommendations made by previous commissions related to Sri Lanka’s post-conflict reconciliation efforts, including the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). 

Findings from the Consultation Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms, established in 2006 by the Government of Sri Lanka, will also be taken into account. Its objective is to lay the foundation for a home-grown solution for truth, reconciliation, and national unity.

A probe has been launched into the recent breach of the Sri Lanka Education Ministry’s official website by an unidentified hacker.

Issuing a statement, the Education Ministry said that the probe is being conducted by several parties, including the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL). 

Expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to the site users, the Education Ministry added that measures are underway to restore the official website as soon as possible. 

The Education Ministry’s website was compromised by an unidentified hacker on Thursday (Apr 04).

The intruder, going by the moniker “Anonymous EEE,” left a message apologizing for the unauthorized access while highlighting security flaws in the system. 

Claiming to be a concerned citizen and A-Level student, the hacker emphasized the breach was reported in the interest of national safety.

“My name is Anonymous EEE and I am currently studying A/l. Sorry for unauthorized access to your website but your website has some security flaws. As a Sri Lankan citizen, I am reporting this for the safety of my country. fix it thanks” a message displayed by the hacker on the Education Ministry Website said. (NewsWire)
