The Welipenna interchange of the Southern Expressway has been reopened for traffic after being temporarily closed due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall yesterday (13).

The Aluthgama–Matugama road section at the interchange was submerged, forcing the closure of the entrance gate towards Colombo, the exit gate for vehicles arriving from Colombo, and the exit gate for vehicles arriving from Galle.

The Police said the restrictions applied to light vehicles only.

However, with water levels receding, the Police said that all affected entry and exit points have now been restored for vehicular movement. (Newswire)

The entrance towards Colombo at the Welipenna interchange of the Southern Expressway has been temporarily closed for light vehicles, the Road Development Authority (RDA) announced.

The RDA said that the decision was taken after the interchange became submerged in water.

However, the RDA confirmed that heavy vehicles heading towards Colombo, as well as all vehicles travelling towards Matara, continue to operate through the interchange as usual. (Newswire)

Three 16-year-old boys who were arrested for beating a man to death in Welipenna have been placed in a Rehabilitation centre in Makola until the 28th of February.

Investigations have revealed that the group had assaulted the victim with helmets due to an argument on the road.

The Police stated that the victim had warned the teenagers not to ride their motorcycles in a reckless manner as it was dangerous for pedestrians.

An argument that had escalated thereafter had resulted in the teenagers assaulting the victim, who is a father of an infant.

The Police stated the suspects are Grade 11 students of a school in which the victim’s wife is a teacher.

Further investigations have revealed that the victim was unemployed at the time of the incident and was awaiting to travel overseas for employment. (NewsWire)
