A 23‑year‑old woman has died after being struck by lightning in the Handapanagala Kenhatha area, within the Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat Division.

The victim, a resident of Kenhatha, had gone to call back her parents who were working in the field near their home. 

She had handed them an umbrella due to the rain and was returning when the tragic incident occurred.

She was killed instantly at the scene following the lightning strike. (Newswire)

A Police sergeant was reported dead in a fatal road accident in the Adawelayaya area on the Wellawaya–Thanamalwila road last evening.

According to the Police, an Army bus travelling towards Wellawaya collided head-on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist, a 36-year-old Police sergeant from Wellawaya, was pronounced dead on admission to the Wellawaya Hospital.

Vehicular movement has been disrupted in the Viharagala area along the Wellawaya- Beragala Road due to an earthslip. 

According to the Disaster Management Centre, the road has been completely blocked due to the earthslip.

The DMC further said that measures are being taken to clear the road.

A 31-year-old man has died after being stabbed with a knife by a 19-year-old girl in the Weerasekera Gama area in Wellawaya. 

The Police said the married man had been involved in a romantic relationship with the girl and was living together with her in a rented house in the area.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the woman had attacked the man after an argument had escalated last evening.

The victim, who is a resident of Nawalapitiya, had succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Wellawaya Hospital.

The woman, who is a resident of Haldumulla, has been arrested by the Wellawaya Police over the murder. The Wellawaya Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)

A van transporting foreign tourists has fallen into a precipice in the Heevalkandura area on the Wellawaya- Koslanda Road early this morning (July 26). 

According to Ada Derana, the van is reported to have veered off the road and fallen into the precipice. 

Four foreign tourists and the driver of the van were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The group is reported to not have sustained any serious injuries, while the vehicle had been severely damaged.

A 3.0 magnitude tremor on the Richter scale has been reported from the Wellawaya, Buttala, and Handapanagala areas today.
