The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today granted bail to the wife of underworld figure ‘Backoe Saman’, who has been held in remand custody under the Money Laundering Act.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (31) ordered  Sadhika Lakshani to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three personal sureties of Rs. 2 million each.

The court also issued an order prohibiting the suspect from travelling abroad, imposing an overseas travel ban.

Additionally, the suspect was ordered to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigations Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Sunday between 9:00 am and 10:00 am. (Newswire)

The wife of the late underworld figure ‘Makandure Madush’ has submitted a letter to IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya, calling for an investigation into her husband’s death. 

Speaking to the media, the woman said that there is suspicion over his death while in Police custody.

“It wouldn’t have mattered if he had been sentenced by the court and hanged. But it is an incident where he was murdered on the road like an animal. At the time, they said the other underworld gang’s motorcycle was found. But we have not been informed of the incident or any suspects involved yet,” she said. 

Stating that it is 05 years since the incident, Makandure Madush’s wife said she has approached the IGP and expects justice from the authorities. 

She further raised suspicion on whether the death had taken place due to his association with certain persons, which had been largely discussed in society at the time of the incident. 

Makandure Madush’s wife added that she hopes the current government will enforce the law in this regard. (Newswire)

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the wife of underworld figure, Backhoe Saman, to be remanded until 18 September.

The order was issued by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) presented her in court today.

The CID presented Backhoe Saman’s wife in court with charges filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. 

Backhoe Saman and his wife were among the wanted suspects who were arrested in Indonesia and brought to Sri Lanka recently. (Newswire)

The Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court has further remanded former minister Lohan Ratwatte and his wife until 18 November for the possession of an illegally assembled unregistered luxury car.

The vehicle without a number plate was found at a house belonging to Ratwatte’s wife in Mirihana recently during a probe conducted by a team of Police officials based on a tip-off from the Mirihana Police.

 The investigating Police Officers had found that the house belonged to Ratwatte’s wife only after discovering the vehicle at the property. 

At the time, Lohan Ratwatte had claimed that his Coordinating Secretary, who had died by suicide in Kandy recently, had brought the car to the property without informing him and that he was unaware of the owner of the vehicle. 

Lohan Ratwatte was arrested later (Oct 31) over the incident, soon after which his wife was also taken into Police custody. (Newswire)

Former Minister Lohan Ratwatte has denied links to a car, without number plates, that was found in the parking lot of a house belonging to his wife in Mirihana, it was reported.

According to the Daily News, during questioning, Lohan Ratwatte had revealed that the vehicle had been brought to the property by his Coordinating Secretary, who recently died by suicide in Kandy. 

The vehicle in question was found at a house in Mirihana belonging to Ratwatte’s wife, during a probe conducted on Saturday by a team of Police officials based on a tip-off from the Mirihana Police.  

The investigating Police Officers are said to have found that the house belonged to Ratwatte’s wife only after discovering the vehicle at the property. 

During questioning, former minister Lohan Ratwatte claimed that his deceased Coordinating Secretary had brought the car to the property without informing him and that he was not aware of the owner of the vehicle. 

As the keys to the car are missing, the Police intend to report facts to the court and then break open the car to inspect the vehicle. 

The Police further intend to conduct an investigation into the vehicle with the assistance of the Government Analysts Department and other relevant officials. (Newswire)

A man who is reported to have constantly assaulted his wife under the influence of alcohol has been killed after being stabbed to death by his wife in the Pulasthipira area. 

The Police stated that the deceased who is a 31-year-old father of one had repeatedly assaulted his 21-year-old wife after consuming alcohol.

Investigations have revealed that the woman acted in self-defence using a knife to stab him to death after he had once again assaulted her after consuming alcohol, causing her injuries.

The woman was arrested and produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court where she was remanded until April 21.
