The Officer‑in‑Charge (OIC) of the Traffic Division of the Yatiyantota Police has been remanded in connection with the misplacement of his service firearm.

Police said the officer was arrested on June 27 by officials of the Seethawakapura Divisional Crime Investigation Unit after failing to return a pistol and 10 bullets issued to him for duty on June 26.

He was produced before the Ruwanwella Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where the Magistrate ordered that he be remanded until June 30.

Investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Seethawakapura Divisional Crime Investigation Unit together with the special operations team of the Seethawak Senior Superintendent of Police. (Newswire)

Police investigations reveal that a woman was behind the death of her 04-year-old daughter who was found in a well in Yatiyanthota on Wednesday. 

The Ruwanwella Police had received information that a child had been found dead in a well close to her house in the Yatiyanthota area in Ruwanwella last morning. 

Preliminary investigations have found that the child’s mother had murdered her by pushing her into the well between 11.00 pm on Tuesday and 05.00 am on Wednesday. 

The woman, who is speech impaired, is receiving treatment under Police protection at the Karawanella Hospital after having fallen ill. 

The Ruwanwella Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
