Unidentified persons opened fire at a residence in Nakulugama, Tangalle, last night. 

According to Police, the suspects fled the area after the shooting.

The house of underworld figure Thambili Lahiru has been set on fire in the Middeniya area, the Police said.

The incident was reported to the Middeniya Police today, who have launched investigations into the arson attack.

The Police confirmed that the blaze targeted Thambili Lahiru’s residence while he remains in custody at the Boossa High Security Prison.

The Middeniya Police is conducting investigations to determine those responsible for the incident.

Over 200 houses have been partially damaged due to the inclement weather experienced in Sri Lanka.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 204 houses have sustained partial damage across 13 districts, as of 10.00 am today (18). 

A total of 5277 persons from 1585 families across 14 districts are severely affected due to the prevalent adverse weather.

The DMC states 135 individuals from 42 families have been placed at two temporary safety shelters.

Two deaths and one injury have been reported thus far due to inclement weather conditions.

The Police have sought public assistance to arrest a suspect wanted over the robbery of money and gold jewellery from a house in Bandarawela on 03 May 2025.

Based on a complaint received by the Ella Police, the suspect had stolen Rs. 45,000 in cash and gold jewellery worth nearly  Rs. 700,000. 

Police investigations have found CCTV footage of the suspect escaping after having robbed the house. 

As the Police are unable to uncover details about the suspect, they have requested public help for this purpose.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has extended financial support to build a house for a Sri Lankan woman who had become physically disabled due to an accident while working in Kuwait.

Accordingly, SLBFE officials handed over a sum of money for the house built in Monaragala with the support of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

The cash was handed over by SLBFE officials, including Chairman Koshala Wickremasinghe to R.M. Kanthirathna Menike on Saturday (22 Mar).

Living in a thatched-roof house, the SLBFE had assisted with building a house for her at a cost of Rs. 1.75 million under the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau’s Housing Welfare Program.

Kanthirathna Menike has lost her husband, while her elder daughter serves in the Sri Lanka Army and her younger daughter is awaiting her GCE Advanced Level Examination results. (Newswire)

Water supply has been disconnected to the guards’ division at former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s official residence on Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo 07, it was reported.

According to media reports, the water supply has been disconnected due to the failure to settle an outstanding bill amounting to Rs. 300,000. 

However, the water supply to the area in the property in which the former president resides has not been affected.

Five suspects have been arrested in connection to the incident of attacking and setting fire to a house in the Thonikkala area in Vavuniya recently (July 23), in which a coupled succumbed to burn injuries. 

Ten persons sustained burn injuries in the incident, while a young couple succumbed to injuries. 

The Police stated that the suspects were arrested by officers attached to the Medavaithyakulam, Sivapuram, Pampemaduwa, and Nelukkulama Police stations yesterday.

The suspects were arrested for conspiring and aiding to carry out the incidents, while the Police had also taken into custody three motorcycles used by them.

The Police stated that the suspects are 24, 27, 31 and 33 years old and are all residents of Vavuniya. 

Investigations into the incident have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Police added that the arrested suspects have been handed over to the CID for further investigations. (NewsWire)
