Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Prof. Chandana Abeyratne has been conferred the honorary title of Emeritus Professor by the University of Kelaniya.

Prof. Abeyratne previously served at the university as Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the appointment took effect on Oct. 14 with the endorsement of Vice Chancellor Nilanthi de Silva.

The title was awarded in recognition of Prof. Abeyratne’s contributions to academia and public administration. 

He is an alumnus of the university, holding a bachelor’s degree in history and a postgraduate degree in philosophy. (Newswire)

The University of Kelaniya and the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD) are set to launch a technology collaboration program aimed at supporting engineering research and manufacturing processes.

A preliminary meeting was recently held at the NERD Centre under the patronage of Science and Technology Minister Dr. Chrishantha Abeysena.

Officials from both institutions exchanged initial views and outlined areas for cooperation. During the event, NERD presented its Technology Incubation Centre, which includes CAD/CAM design tools and modern CNC machinery.

Under the proposed collaboration, the University of Kelaniya will have access to NERD’s human resources and technical facilities through its University Business Linkage (UBL) initiatives.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed in the near future to formalize the partnership. (Newswire)

The new Government Fertility Centre established at the Ragama Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya has reported its first successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) fertility treatment.  

The treatment, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is conducted at a low cost and with government aid. 

Speaking to the media, the first patient to undergo the treatment revealed she was 28 weeks pregnant and that the treatment was successful.

“I had no children for almost 08 years after marriage. I underwent many treatments, and I could not pay more than Rs. 01 million. As I had no alternative, I agreed to this treatment. Once I started the treatment, I was given everything free of charge. Now I am 28 weeks pregnant,” she said. 

Also commenting on the treatment, Specialist Doctor Tiran Dias of the Ragama Medical Faculty told the media that the treatment was conducted as a pilot project.

“We wanted to ascertain whether this treatment could be conducted by us, and we have proven it. It has been successful. Now, we will have to hold discussions with the relevant officials, including the Health Ministry, on creating a system to continuously provide this treatment and on patient selection,” he added. The wife of Dr. N.D.G. Gayantha, Head of the Psychology Unit at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Kelaniya, who died in a tragic accident recently, has passed away this morning (26 Mar).

According to state newspaper Dinamina, the lecturer’s wife, who had also sustained serious injuries in the accident, had been receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased, Satheesha Nilanthi, is also a university lecturer, and was 42 years old at the time of her demise. 

The accident occurred on the Central Expressway while the couple, along with their three young children, was returning from a trip to Nagadeepa in Jaffna on 19 March. 

The van they were traveling in collided with the rear of a lorry, during which Dr. N.D.G. Gayantha had passed away.

His wife, three children, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law had all sustained injuries and had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The mother-in-law and children had left the hospital after receiving treatment, while the brother-in-law had succumbed to injuries the day before. (Newswire)

A male student has been reported dead after falling from the upper floor of the C.W.W. Kannangara Hostel at Kelaniya University.

According to the Police, the incident had occurred early this morning (Oct 23). 

The student had reportedly died after being admitted to the Kiribathgoda Hospital. 

The deceased has been identified as a fourth-year student of Kelaniya University. 

The Kelaniya Police is conducting investigations into the incident. (Newswire)

An elderly Sri Lankan woman has obtained a postgraduate degree at the age of 97 years, it was reported. 

Leelawathi Dharmaratne obtained a Master’s Degree in Buddhist studies at the 143rd graduation ceremony of the Kelaniya University held on August 21.

Setting an example to the younger generation, speaking to the media after having obtained her degree, Leelawathi Dharmaratne said age was not a barrier to education.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited Kelaniya University today (Jan 31), despite recent protests against his visit. 

The President visited the university to declare open the new building at the premises of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies at the university this morning.

Students of the Kelaniya University had on Monday staged a protest blocking the Colombo- Kandy Road against the President’s visit to the university.

The Police had resorted to firing tear gas to disperse the students, after which the latter had taken over the administration building and had continued their protest. (NewsWire)
