The Department of Examinations has said that the absence of a National Identity Card (NIC) will not be an obstacle for students applying for the 2026 GCE Ordinary Level Examination. 

All applicants are urged to submit their applications before July 23.

Applications are being accepted online from July 3 to July 23, 2026, and candidates are advised to carefully follow the instructions provided in the official examination notification when submitting their forms.

The Department emphasized that the final date for accepting applications will not be extended under any circumstances.

The Department for Registration of Persons has announced that National Identity Cards (NICs) for students sitting the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations this year will be expedited.

Director General Jagath Herath said the Department expects to issue permanent NICs to all students before the end of the year. 

He noted that schools have already been informed through the Ministry of Education to submit applications for students sitting the Ordinary Level examination, and principals must ensure these are forwarded without delay.

Herath further stated that Advanced Level candidates scheduled to sit the examination in August who have applied for an NIC but have not yet received it can obtain their cards by notifying the Department through the telephone numbers or email addresses listed on its official website.

The Department of Examinations has announced that the results of the 2025 G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination are scheduled to be released by the middle of June.

Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Kumari Liyanage, responding to inquiries about social media claims that results would be released in the coming days, clarified that no exact date has yet been finalized. 

However, she confirmed that arrangements are in place to issue the results by mid‑June.

The 2025 O/L examination was conducted from February 17 to 26, with a total of 451,463 candidates sitting for the exam.

She further said that the marking of answer scripts for this year’s examination will be conducted in two phases from the 12th of March until the 10th of April.

The Department of Registration of Persons has issued an official notice regarding arrangements for G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination candidates, outlining special measures to confirm National Identity Card (NIC) information ahead of the upcoming exams.

The Department has announced that its head office and provincial offices in Galle, Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, and Nuwara Eliya will remain open on Saturday (14 Feb) from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm for the sole purpose of issuing letters confirming NIC information for candidates sitting the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination beginning on 17 February.

The new educational transformation initiative, scheduled to begin in 2026, will see its official guidelines released in August 2025, Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, PM Harini Amarasuriya said.

PM Amarasuriya said that this was discussed during a meeting held at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Maharagama yesterday, adding that the discussion focused on the steps required to implement the reforms and train teachers accordingly. 

She further said that the following reforms will be introduced gradually.

• New curricula will be introduced for Grades 1 and 6 in 2026
• A new syllabus will be introduced for Grade 10 in 2028
• The first GCE Ordinary Level Exam under the new syllabus will take place in 2029
• Vocational education will be introduced from Grade 9

PM Amarasuriya stated that the reform process will be based on curriculum revision, teacher training, infrastructure and administration, proper assessment mechanisms, and public engagement. 

She emphasised that it was the responsibility of NIE to produce teachers who are well-prepared for this transformation.

The Department of Examinations has announced that the Practical Exams of the GCE Ordinary Level Examinations 2024 (2025) will be held in May 2025.

According to the Commissioner General of Examinations, the Practical Exams will be held from 21-31 May at 1,228 examination centres nationwide for 171,100 candidates.

The Exam Department states it is mandatory for students to appear for both the written and practical tests, as the marks from both tests will be used to determine the final results of the subjects.

It is reported that the admission forms and timetables of school applicants have been sent to the relevant principals, and the admission forms of private applicants have been sent to the residential address they have mentioned in their application.

An 80-year-old man sitting for the 2024 (2025) GCE Ordinary Level Examination has appealed to meet Education Minister and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, after expressing dissatisfaction over the Mathematics examination paper. 

Speaking to the media, the elderly man said students are provided papers for the mathematics subject, curated for engineers.

“Previously, separate maths exam papers were provided to students from the arts, commerce and engineering fields. However, now papers curated for engineers are being provided for all students. This is unfair and has been going on for years,” he pointed out.  

The elderly man urged the Education authorities to recommence the system of providing maths question papers curated for the subject fields, instead of a common paper.

The acceptance of applications for the 2024 (2025) G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination commences today.

According to the Department of Examinations, the applications will be accepted starting today until 30 November. 

Issuing a statement, the department announced that only applications sent online, via its official websites – www.doenets.lk or www.onlineexams.gov.lk/eic, will be accepted.

The results of the 2023 (2024) GCE Ordinary Level Examinations are expected to be released in September this year, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha said. 

The Education Minister said that the papermarking of practical tests is in the final week and once completed, the checking of answer scripts will be completed.

He said, hence, the Department of Examinations intends to release the results of the examination in September. 

Minister Premajayantha further said that the Education Ministry hopes to conduct the GCE Ordinary Level Examination during the first two months of 2025.

According to Daily News, Examination Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara said on Sunday that steps are being taken to release the results within this week.

Fresh allegations have been raised against the recently concluded 2023 (2024) GCE Ordinary Level Examinations. 

Several students had raised concerns over the question papers as well as irregularities at the examination centres during the examination, with fresh allegations being raised following its conclusion.

14 Tamil-medium students of Al-Aman Muslim Maha Vidyalaya in Minuwangoda alleged that they were not provided with the part 1 paper and maps for the Geography subject consisting of 50 marks. 

“When we requested the part 1 paper, they said it had been given. Until the end, we were not given the question paper. All the students are capable of doing geography well. Losing 50 marks is very unfair,” they said, speaking to reporters.

Meanwhile, allegations have also been raised about failing to permit the requested services for two special needs children.

It was reported that a special needs student who sat for the exam at the centre in St. Anthonys School in Wattala had been prevented from receiving the services of an individual to write out the answers for him, which had been permitted by the Exam Department. 

The parents of the child filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka alleging that the special service for their child had been suspended for the part 2 paper of the English Language. 

A special needs student from Methodist College Colombo who had received permission to obtain the services of an individual to write out the answers for her for four subjects had also been suspended. 

Despite the school authorities having informed the officials of the exam centre in this regard, the child had been prevented from obtaining the said services for the four exams. 

The child’s parents have also filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka on the unfair treatment. Having waited for nearly four hours at the Human Rights Commission, the parents of the children revealed that officials from the Department of Examinations had not appeared to resolve the matter. 

Commenting on the incidents, Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin condemned the unfair treatment of the students sitting for the examination.

He said the issue was that Tamil-language officials were not stationed in schools undergoing exams in the said language and the officials present were unable to communicate or understand the requirements of the students.

Joseph Stalin also pointed out that there were special provisions in the law for students with special needs sitting for examinations, adding that it was regrettable to see the rights of the children being violated when such legal provisions were available. (Newswire)
