President Donald Trump late Wednesday night signed a funding bill that will end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

The House passed the bill by a 222-209 margin earlier in the evening. The Senate passed the bill on Monday.

The legislation will fund the government through Jan. 30 and provide funding for some government agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year.

The House passed the funding measure earlier in the evening, after eight Senate Democrats broke with their party to advance the package Monday night.

“Today we’re sending a clear message that we will never give in to extortion,” Trump said, alluding to Democrats’ demand that GOP leaders agree to negotiate policy to head off the expiration at year’s end of health care subsidies for millions of Americans.

The president also made his pitch again for nixing the Senate filibuster, despite the resistance of most Republican senators. “If we had the filibuster terminated, this would never happen again,” Trump said of the historic funding lapse. “And don’t forget, we have another date coming up in the not-too-distant future.”

Trump urged Americans not to forget about the damage he said was caused by Democrats and to remember that when they go to the polls next year.

“So I just want to tell the American people, you should not forget this. When we come up to midterms and other things, don’t forget what they’ve done to our country,” Trump said.

The Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery will cease operations for 45 days in early July 2024, more than 03 years since the previous turnaround (TAR) in February 2021, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) announced today. 

Issuing a statement, the CPC said that this is a mandatory requirement, in compliance with international norms, that qualifies the refinery for safe and reliable operation for a further 03 years.

Once the refinery is brought back on stream after the Turnaround, it will be subjected to upgrades designed to increase its contribution to Sri Lanka’s changing product requirements. 

The CPC said during the scheduled shutdown, it will maintain a full capacity of crude to regain full throughput in the shortest possible time, along with a buffer stock of products for approximately twice the planned shutdown period to ensure continuous supply to customers. (NewsWire)
