Former chairman of the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation (STC), Hussein Ahamed Bhaila, has been arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly causing a loss of Rs. 99,679,799.70 to the government in 2015.

According to the Bribery Commission, he is accused of having imported 50 temporary warehouses without any need during his tenure, causing a loss to the government and a gain equivalent to that amount to external parties.

Ahmed Bahila was arrested by the Bribery Commission at around 8.30 am today (31) and is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. 

Bhaila, who served as Chairman of the State Trading Corporation from February to October 2015, was also a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2010. During his tenure, he held several deputy ministerial posts, including Advanced Technology & National Enterprise Development (2004–2005), Plan Implementation (2005–2007), and External Affairs (2007–2010). The stock of rice ordered by the government will be distributed through Lanka Sathosa and Cooperative outlets starting today, the State Trading Corporation announced.

State Trading Corporation Chairman, Ravindra Fernando said the first consignment containing 780 MT of Nadu rice has already arrived in the country.

He further said that from the first consignment, 200 MT of rice will be sold through Lanka Sathosa outlets.

Stating that another consignment of 5200 MT of rice was nearing the Colombo Port, he said steps would be taken to distribute it tomorrow. 

Ravindra Fernando added that tenders have been called and finalized for an additional order of 26,000 MT of rice.

Meanwhile, according to Sri Lanka Customs, 80,000 MT of rice ordered by the private sector have already been distributed to the local market. (Newswire)
