The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for warm weather in the Eastern province and the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Monaragala districts today (18). 

Per the advisory, the Heat index, the temperature felt on the human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places during the daytime. 

Residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight where possible and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level Warm Weather Advisory for 17 districts, warning that the heat index is likely to rise to “Caution level” in several parts of the country on May 3.

The advisory, issued on May 2, is valid for the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as the Colombo, Gampaha and Monaragala districts.

According to the department, the heat index — the temperature felt by the human body — is expected to increase during daytime hours in the affected areas.

The Meteorology Department said the heat index forecast is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature data and does not represent the actual maximum temperature forecast.

Public have been advised to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related health issues.

People working at job sites have been urged to stay hydrated and take regular breaks in shaded areas, while those indoors were advised to check on elderly individuals and persons who are ill.

The public was also warned never to leave children unattended inside vehicles and to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the daytime. Residents were further advised to wear lightweight, white or light-colored clothing and remain hydrated. (Newswire)

The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level warm weather advisory for 19 districts, warning of increased heat index levels tomorrow (April 15).

The advisory issued at 3.30 p.m. today, covers the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Southern and Eastern provinces, as well as Monaragala district.

According to the department, the heat index — which reflects how hot it feels on the human body — is expected to reach caution levels in several areas.

The heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature.

The Department said the advisory is based on forecasts generated using global numerical weather prediction models, with health-related guidance prepared in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

The public has been advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, taking regular breaks in shaded areas, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
