The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level warm weather advisory for 19 districts, warning of increased heat index levels tomorrow (April 15).

The advisory issued at 3.30 p.m. today, covers the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Southern and Eastern provinces, as well as Monaragala district.

According to the department, the heat index — which reflects how hot it feels on the human body — is expected to reach caution levels in several areas.

The heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature.

The Department said the advisory is based on forecasts generated using global numerical weather prediction models, with health-related guidance prepared in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

The public has been advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, taking regular breaks in shaded areas, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities.

Special attention has been urged for the elderly and those who are unwell.

Authorities also warned against leaving children unattended in vehicles and recommended wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing to reduce heat exposure. (Newswire)
