The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today ordered to detain and interrogate till 08 July eleven (11) officers attached to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) over their links to drug dealers.

The officers were arrested by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today.

The officers were arrested, following the interdiction of 4 Police officers from the PNB on 29 June over their links to drug lords.

The interdiction led to the Head of the PNB Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sanjeewa Medawatte being transferred to the Police Welfare Division.

The transfer was initiated by the National Police Commission based on a request put forward by the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickramaratne.

Following this, DIG K. Aponso was appointed as the new head of the Police Narcotic Bureau.

An investigation was launched into officers attached to the PNB by the CID after it was revealed that some officers had sold 100 kg of drugs to drug lords operating from Dubai

The officers were accused of taking the drugs from the large haul of narcotics worth over Rs. 100 million that was placed under the custody of the PNB.

Investigations revealed that the large haul of drugs that were seized by a team from the PNB during a raid in the Southern Province had been allegedly sold by another group of officers attached to the Bureau. (Newswire)
